By STEVE PORTER Telegraph sports writer ALTON — Delancey Smith got Alton’s Redbirds going in the right direction Friday and Todd Lockhart kept them going that way. Smith returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a touch down and Lockhart scored three times himself as the Redbirds defeated Quincy 35- 15 at Public School Stadium. The Redbirds are 1-1 and the Blue Devils are 0-2. “Coach (Joe Hook) said we really had to concentrate on this game to get us over the hump,” Alton wide receiver Blaine Everage said. Smith set the tone when he outraced the Quincy defense to the end zone just 19 seconds into the game. He later caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Wooley. “After I got the ball, I could see the wall (of blockers) forming,” Smith said. “As soon as I got around the wall, I thought I was close to going all the way. It gave us some momentum,” Hook agreed. “I wish I could say I called that play and take credit for it,” he quipped. “But it was a great job by Delancey and our block ers on the kickoff. He has great speed and when he got to the sideline, I didn’t think they were going to catch him.” Lockhart took control of things in the second quarter. He scored on a 1-yard run, a 35-yard scamper with a fumble and caught a 48-yard TD pass from Wooley to enable the Redbirds to surge ahead 28-0. Turnovers plagued Quincy the whole game. The Blue Devils, who lost six fumbles in their opener with Peoria Notre Dame, were hampered by three interceptions and three fumbles Friday. “That's what you have to do in football — take advantage of the other team’s mistakes,” Quincy coach Butch Kuras said. “We’re a young team there’s no doubt about that but we aren’t looking to make excuses.’ Quincy did make a come back in the second half. Josh Osborne’s 10-yard run early in the third quarter got the Blue Devils on the scoreboard at 28- 7. Then quarterback Dustin Rife hooked by with teammate Chris Adams for a 13-yard scoring pass. Rife hit Borden Issac with a conversion pass and Quincy was within 28-15. “The game was a little slop py and ugly and we didn’t play well offensively or defensively in the third quarter,” Hook I See REDBIRDS, Page B4 The Telegraph/JOHN BADMAN Delaney Smith ran for an 87-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff to start Alton’s route of Quincy Friday.
