Pioneers clobber Barrackville by 42-0MASONTOWN — Masontown Valley High School racked up 390 yards in total offense and Mark Whittaker scored three touchdowns as the Pioneers successfully opened their 1972 football season with a 42-0 thrashing of Barrackville.Valley scored single touchdowns in the first three quarters, and thenexploded for 20 points in the final quarter en route to the easy win.Whittaker got the ball rolling in the first period with a 75-yard jaunt, and Ed Metheny ran for thetwo extra points.In the second quarter, Jeff Wiles picked up a Barrackville fumble and raced 15 yards for the second score, and this time quarterback Pat McMillen kept for the extra points making the score 16-0 at the half.Whittaker took off for 35 yards and another score in the third quarter, but this time the try for the extra points failed.Then in the final 12 minutes, Whittaker and McMillen turned in long punt returns for touchdowns. Whittaker was first, rambling 70 yards for his third touchdown, and McMillen followed with a 50-yard return.The try for points failed the first time, but Brian Trickett ran in two points after McMillen’s run.Metheny got a touchdown near the end of the contest when he ran 18 yards.
