Warriors' Defensive UnitShows Great Promise; Ends, Flankers Pose Key Problems“We feel that we have a pretty solid defensive unit, especially up front.”Coach Don Young. Gettysburg High School's head football coach, made that statement prior to the Warriors’ first workout against East Penns-boro. And Young’s statement proved that tlie team was just that as both clubs left the field without a score.However, Young was exjrect ing a good performance out of his defensive line. The one phase of the game that made him perk up a little was the offensive line. There he has done so much patching that it is beginning to look like an old fashioned quilt.George Cressler is the biggest offensive lineman on the club at 5*Ur\ 195 pounds. With his size and weight it’s only natural that he should anchor the wall. Right behind him will be Junior Chris Hoffman and senior transfer, Peck Forney. Working on either side of Cressler will be guards Sam Leedy and Kirby Smith. Leedy played some offensive guard on the Junior High team a year ago, but it will be remembered that Smith was a halfback with the varsity in 1.969. Rich Yingling, another senior, appears to be the leading candidate to rotate at guard.Senior Jeff Kane has the most experience of all the linemen. Working out of his tackle slot, he should also make a fine leader. Mike Smith, who played center a year ago, has been moved over to tackle to work with Kane. Smith is rated as an excellent competitor. Bill Parr and Steve Feaga need a little more work and in time should become a couple of fine replacements..The defensive line will be placed in the hands of Cressler, Mike Smith, Leedy and Andy Crouse. Leedy and Smith will handle the inside slots. RECEIVING PROBLEMThe main problem confronting the Warriors right now is building an adequate corps of flank-,ers and split ends. Mike Con-drey, Tom Ford and Dick Davies are battling for the flankerpost. Andy Crouse and Doug Staub are running nip-and-tuck for tiie split end assignment Pass receiving is a problem with all five men, There were indications after Easf Penns-boro scrimmage that Young may muke some changes at botii slots before the seasonopens.One of the most pleasant surprises has been the performance of transfer Bernie Craig. Craig is a 5*8, 175-pound explosive runner from Florida. “He's an outstanding prospect as an offensive back and defensive linebacker.” Young statedHe is a powerful runner and a good open field runner, lie has ail the moves that it lakes to be a fine athlete, but I’ll have to see him under pressure first.” Young saw him under pressure and was thoroughly convinced that his running game has been strengthenedActually the offensive hack-field is one of the Warriors' stronger points. Jim Williams is returning to the quarterback slot as is Junior Tom Fiscel and sophomore Rusty Maitland. All three had timing troubles last week, but as the season progresses, this will fade and three fine athletes will emerge. Tailback Dan Odell is the most experienced backfield m a n while fullback Tim Kane is a powerful runner and exceptional blocker. Tom Crouse is probably the quickest open field runner on the club. Also coming on strong is sophomore Jody MacAvov. WiLh this lineup of backs Young is blessed with good depth and speed.TWO LINEBACKERSOn the defensive side of thedger, Young wlil have Jeff Kane and Kirby Smith handling two of the linebacking assignments. However, the third is a toss-up with Tim Kane. Mac-Avoy and Craig battling for the job.Heading the three deep men will be Williams, Odell and Tom Crouse. Waiting in the wings will he Davies, Condrey, Fiscel and Maitland.Gettysburg lias a certain amount of balance and this will become more evident when thetransplants become more accustomed to their new assignments. There is certainly no lack of spirit and enthusiasm among the squad members. Young started out with 54 players and is now down to 38. However, he is quick to point out that right now “we have 38 ball players, all good solid boys physically and menially.’1The Warrior coaching staff, which consisted of “Chuck” Lilly and Bill Heyser, has been completed with the addition of JV coach Jim Price.The Warriors open their campaign at Westminster on September 11.
