Lincoln baseball fans have taken it upon them-selves to pay honor to the Lincoln Chiefs at Sherman Field tonight, a mighty fine gesture on the part of the people who pay the freight. No team ever deserved praise more than the 1956members of Shepard s Herd. And I'd like to use this space to say “Thank you,” to the Chiefs on behalf of the fellows who earn their bread and butter writing and talking about the Lincoln club.Sports writers are usually envied because they “get to see every game.” That’s fine as far as it goes, but it should be pointed out that they “see every game” whether the team is good or bad. .There’s not much to write about when a baseball team is lounging in the cellar, 30 or so games off the pace in August. Words just don't come easily. For the past several summers, August has seemed to drag on for an eternity. Jt was almost impossible to write something new about a worn-out cluo struggling to finish the season. Then came Larry Shepard and a hard-fighting, hustling band of Chiefs this summer. Tfre cnange was tremendous.Hail The ChiefsThe summer seemed to whiz by. Watching the Chiefs was a pleasure and writing about them real fun. No tired old men were these Chiefs. They were youngsters who kept themselves and the writers hopping.First there was the mad scramble for the record books as Dick Stuart started his home run barrage that was to make shambles of the Western League records.Dirk is good espy. He likes te talk and modesty \%m'i sae *f Ms mast obvious virtues. If yen want to write about hint «r bis bsme runs, he’ll supply plenty uf Material. There followed such thrills and reporting about Kenny Toothman stealing bases for a new Lincoln record, the Chiefs swatting home runs at a record-breaking clip, two no-hitters m four days and many others.I Suffice to say that Larry and1 irr ”his boys not only 'brought a lot of pleasure to Lincoln fans, they made the summer of 1956 delightfully refreshing for the members of the Fourth pstate. On the subject of the Chiefs, I'd like to make some nominations:Best major league praspeclt—Sam Miley, Ken Toothman and vIlowie Goss.M(*t improved player—HowieGoss. Most power—Dick Stuart (who. else?) -Least power—Al Stringer.Best dresser—Joe Zavattaro, Most valuable player—Reliefer Don Williams.Best hustler—John McDevitt, pushed by Miley and Toothman.
