Car WreckedPaul Young' of Lancaster, Pa., won the feature events at the auto races here Friday, and Henry G-eurand, youthful Somerville, K J., spedster, carried off chief honors Saturday, as the two-day auto race program climaxed the 46th annual Altamont fair.Thousands watched the events both days. In Friday’s race, Reurand lacked only one tenth of a second of equaling the track record of 27 seconds held by Frankie Bailey. During Saturday’s races, Henry Gritzbaeh, Schenectady driver, miraculously escaped death or serious injury in the main event, when, in attempting to pass a competitor on the 10th lap, the right front wheel of the Gritz-Riley special snapped off.COUNTY GOP PLANS)ANNUAL CLAMBAKEON SEPTEMBER 24lt;♦ The machine overturned and crashed through a guard rail on the outside of the track. Gritzbaeh was thrown clear of the wreckage, but the eloping wheel catapulted over the roof of the horse barns near the oval. Gritzbaeh’s injuries- were a broken left wrist and body cuts and bruises. Young and Geurand supplied, the racing thrills of the day which was unmarked by any serious spills. First they hooked up in the opening heat, a 10-lap grind. Young starting second took over the lead on the first lap, and held it strongly to the finish. Next they met in the 30-laps, 15-miie feature. Young drew the pole this time, and was away to a good lead. Geurand stuck to him grimly, though,the--nr~vrpace-setter. Young ate dust for .the next six laps then on the upper turu he challenged Geurand. He drew up on even terms and they raced as a team past the grandstand.
