LAUDERDALE, Fla, — The California Surf played to the tune of “Stayin’ Alive” in Game 2 of the first round of the North American soccerLeague playoffs Sunday night.The Surf, playing it’s best soccer in a while, forced a 30-minute, minigame tiebreaker by beating Ft. Lauderdale. 2-0, before 15,282 fans atLockhart Stadium.Having had troubles scoring lately, the Surf scored twice within eight minutes early in the second half giving it the first win in four attempts over the Strikers,The Surf couldn’t continue its goal-scoring magic in the mini-game, however, which ended in a scoreless tie, forcing a shoot-out to determine the playoff champion.But when it comes to scoring, California is no match for the potent Strikers, who took the five-attempt, sudden-death shootout to move on to another playoff series this week.Going into this game, the Strikers had several things in their favor Among them: a 5-1 record versus the Surf, an ll-game winning streak over California teams, a 12-4 home record this season and a 2-1 win in Game 1.For the Surf, things didn't look as good.It started the match with Manny Neves and Jim Hinch on the bench with ankle injuries. Joe Clarke was questionable as a sub because of a knee injury. That left goalie Mike Mahonpy, midfielder Alan Kelly and coach and defender Peter Wall as the only healthy substitutes.
