Women s Sports Gain In StatureWomen’s athletics is becoming a larger part of the sports pictureat Ohio University.Intercollegiate competition isoffered in nine sports this seasonwith the university having itsfirst two full-time coaches —Nancy Schaub. volleyball andbasketball, and Sharon O’Mara swimming — in women's sportsthis season Several others, as inthe past, will be supplied bv the physical education department.This season Ohio will compete in field hockey, swimming, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, golf, lacrosse and track and field The women were successful in several areas of competition last year with the softball teamfinishing its season with a 10-0 record Basketball had a fine 12-3 year, and volleyball came through with a 10-0 record Two players of the field hockey squad. Janet Steele and Wendy Weeden, were invited to try out for the U S. squad which toured Europe and Africa this summer Several fine athletes return including two — Susie Roberts, field hockey and basketball, and Jane Scott, swimming and lacrosse — who starred in more than one sport.Some other top returnees areMary Ellen Rucci, field hockey; Julie Cole, basketball; Tom Anderson, volleyball; Pat Lilienthal, basketball; Debbie Instone, swimming; Alice Hoffman and Debbie Ghezzi, tennis, and Marge Fetrow, Nancy Thorne and Kathy Keller, volleyball.Participation is open to all women students at the university, with practice beginning in field hockey, volleyball, swimming and golf Sept. 26.The basketball team will begin practice Oct. 21, with spring sports starting in late February or early MarchFurther information can be obtained by calling Barbara Berry at the Convocation Center, or stopping by the Women’s Sports Offices after school begins.Early Graduation Possible At OUIt is possible to complete a bachelor’s degree program at Ohio University in less than four years by taking a larger credit hour load each quarter (17-18)hour si, by attending tourquarters each year, by completing correspondence courses or by getting credit through advanced placement or course credit through examination
