Clark goes on the warpath against BulldogsBy Bill Clark Staff WriterJEFFCLARKEVERETT- Everett coach Irv Brambley would probably do it again. His team was slapped with a 15-vard penalty for its late return to the field for the second half against Clavsburg Friday night. But the etx-ra time may have helped. The Warriors responded with a pair of third quarter touchdowns and they chased the Bulldogs home, 24-11.I whispered in their ears,” Brambley said with a grin.Whatever he said at halftime worked. The Warriors trailed 11-8 , but regained the lead when record* smasher Jeff Clark took Everett’s first play of the second half 82 yards. The Warriors got the ball back and drove in for another TD, again Clark scoring. Clavsburg, which looked somuch better than an 0-9 team in the first half, couldn’t get back in the game.Brambley spoke of the Warriors' “character,” coming back against the Bulldogs, who burned Everett with a 60-.vard bomb on the first play of the game.“We weren’t playing football in the first half. We got beat on the big028 Stitil Wood Boss'play and we went into a lull. The second half we started playing.” Brambley put it.Early in the game, the Warriors fumbled the ball at the Bulldog 36. On the next play Ciavsburg's Jim Garver tossed the 60-varder to Brian Helsel. who carried it to the Everett 6. A penalty moved it to the 3.Two cracks at the goat line by Jim Imler failed to pay off and a third down penalty forced Clavsburg to try a field goal. Dewavne Wevendt made good on the 27-vard attempt and the Bulldogs led 3-0,Clavsburg got the ball back, and moved to midfield. The Bulldogs ran out of luck when they gambled on a fourth down and one at the Everett 49. The Warriors held, then drove in for a go-ahead score. The 51-yard drive took nine plays, Quarterback Mark Leidy completed only one of seven passes, but his 14-yard strike to Troy Potts set up the TD. Clark's 11-vard surge up the middle and two-point conversion put the Warriors ahead 8-3,The Bulldogs responded with their own TD drive. Claysburg turned Imler loose on pitches to the outside and Garver was finding Helsel openon short passes to the sidelines. There were 20 penalties in the game, ten by each squad. One pass interference call against the Warriors helped along Ciavsburg’s drive. From the 15, a well executed pop pass to Garver, cutting across the middle, put the Bulldogs back in front. Garver also connected with Bruce Reilly for the two-pointer.The second half was another story. The Warriors took at punt at their 18. One first down Clark took the quick-opener dive through the center of the line and ran 82 yards. They were giving us the middle,” Brambiev said. And Clark took it all.Everett stopped the Bulldogs again and started work at their 28. The Warriors covered the 72 yards in eight plays.Clark broke the dive play again for 19 yards as the Warriors marched across midfield. On first down at the C-K 29, Clark took a handoff from Leidy and scampered past the pursuit. There were still three minutes left in the third period,The rest of the game was a countdown for Clark as he added to his rushing total. Kenny May’s single game scoring record fell with about six minutes to play.EVERETT 24, CLAYSBURG 11EVERETT 0 i 14 0 —24CLAYSBURG J I 0 0 —11CK— Dewayne Weyendt, 27-yard field goal, 7:1# of 1st€— Jeff Clark, 11-yard run (Clark run! ?:24 of 2ndCIC— Brian Helselr 15-yard pass from Jim Garver, (Pass- Bruce Reilly from Garver J 7:00 ol 2ndE— Jeff Clark, 12-yard run (Jim Benbow run) 1:32 of 3rd€— Jeff Clark, 2?-yard run (Mark Leidy run! 2:57 ol 3rdSTATISTICSEVERETTIS350141-714-310-402*24First Downs Net Rustling Pass Yardage Pass Record Intercepted By Fombles-Lost Penalties’Yards Punts-AverageCLAYSBURG11SPECIAL BUYS FROMB F Auto SalesU.S. 30/ Mile Level/ Bedford — 623*2747 Don Pepple * Jeff Bussard * Joel BussardCARS1984 SUBARU GL TURBO STATION WAGONAM/FM/Tape, Auto.. Clark ran for 295 yards and three touchdowns and the Warriors scalped Claysburg 24-11.I want to thank the offensive line,I couldn’t have done it without vou♦guys,” Clark lold his teammates. Those linemen. Travis .Smith, Randy Bottomley. Scott Brodbeck. Todd Wallace. Scot I McCune, and tight ends Trent Edwards and Brian Dinnocenti, provided the holes through the Clavsburg lineClark provided the rest:—On Everett’s first offensive play of the second half. Clark took a quick opener dive off center. He ran past the entire Clavsburg secondary, straight up the field. 82 yards.—Later in the quarter. Clark look an outside veer down the home team’s sideline, 29 more yards and another touchdown.—A couple of times Clark and Crew exploded Ihrough the Bulldog line and only a saving tackle prevented another score.—But most of the time Clark gutted out a handful of tough yards, powering to a first down, dragging along a defender or two.“It's not often a kid has a night like that,” Everett coach Irv Brambley said. Clark carried the ball 31 times, scored 20 points and broke two school records.“He’s an outstanding kid, one o! the best in the county.” Brambley began. “He's right there’ with the best backs around. Jeff has the desire, and. he’s the most dedicated athlete I’ve coached and I've been coaching quite a while.“Jeff deserved to haven game like this. The Ve’cHrd of the team ’(3-6) doesn't do him justice.”Clark's 295 yards eclipsed the record of 247 yards set against Northern Bedford in 1980 by another Everett great. Kenny May. Anotherschool record held by May, careerrushing, was surpassed during Friday night’s superb performance. Clark’s total stands at 1,871 yards, or 38 yards ahead of Mnv’s career total of 1.833.Brambley says Clark, a sixth-place finisher in the state wrestling tournament last winter, would like to play college football somewhere. For right now, though. Clark has more immediate plans.“We play North Star next week and they're hard to read.” Brambley looked ahead. “I will say. though, they’ll he tough. Their record isn’t that great, but they play in a good conference.Next Friday nighi at Everett. North Star will meet a good, lough tullhack/linebacker.‘‘Jeff’s an outstanding linebacker. Brambley said. He finds the ball and he really pounds you.“In fad,” Brambley reflected, “Because of the way he plays offense and defense, I’d say he’s probably the best player in the county.”And one of Everett’s best ever.
