West Valley and Monroe Catholic kept their Region VI girls prep volleyball title hopes alive by posting victories in five-game matches Friday night.West outlasted league-leading NorthPole 15-11, 9-15, 15-5, 12-15, 15-13 to pull within a half-game of first place and Monroe upended Eielson 15-11, 18-16, 3-15,10-15,15-13 to move within a game of the top spotTonight, North Pole plays at Monroe in the final Region VI game of the season If North Pole wins the Patriots will claim the championship and an automatic berth into the state tournament, but if Monroe wins there will be a three-way tie for the top spot.West claimed its victory in dramatic fashion as the Wolfpack bounced back from a 13-9 deficit to win the decisive fifth game 15-13. Janet Hand served for the final three points to secure the victory.“I’m extremely happy with the win, being that it was our last game and kept us in the running for the region championship. said West coach Matt Steffes. ‘‘We had some very strong bench support tonight.”Sharon Kim led the West attack with 17 spikes and 10 kills with Hand, Pam Baker and Courtney King also having good hitting games. King and Milan were the leading setters.The West girls wore their uniforms to school Friday and painted their faces in the school colors, red and gold. They had planned to take the makeup off prior to the match, but then decided to leave it on.“Since there was nothing in the rule book against it, we bacame the first truly color coordinated team,” Steffessaid “It wasn’t to well received by North Pole, but it was certainly interesting for us ”West finished the season with a 12-game winning streak and a 17-4 overall record West is 9-3 in league play while North Pole is 9-2 and 13-6 overall“Callie Thomas, Sheryl Bond and Johnna Thomas played extremely well tonight Callie had her best net game with her spiking,” said North Pole coach Linda Marquette “We had a few mental problems which really affected our teamwork, but both teams showed a great deal of talent offensively and defensively.”West’s junior varsity handed North Pole its second loss of the season by posting a 15-12,15-4 decision.Monroe trailed 7-3 early in the final game its match with Eielson, but the Rams rallied to pull out the victory.
