Cougar Harriers Are No. 1/'AMP BELL SPORT’S cross country program has come a ^ long way In four years.“That first year, I had to patch a team together on a moment’s notice. We wound up fourth m :he Scenic Moraine Conference and never got out of the regional,” Cougar coach Jim YoUmer said Monday in doing a little reminiscing. Those days are ail behind Volimer and his Cougar runners. They now role the roast after taking the medium school title last Saturday at Wales in the W1AA State Crocs Country Meet.Glenn Stommel is the only member of this year’s championship squad who was with VoUmer at the beginning.“Glenn was our No. 1 runner as a freshman, and that takes some kind of guts for a kid,”VoUmer said. The coach continued: “I'm most happy for Glenn that we won a state title. He’s been hampered by injuries and yet he ran his best time ever in tbe state meet on .he Nagawaukee course.”Stommel was sixth among individuals at Wales his sophomore season when Camp-bellsport made ts first state meet appearance bv placing eighth in the small school class. The Cougars moved up to the medium school class last fall and placed fourth, and Stommel was ninth.Last weekend, Stommel, who has been unable to do any speed work recently because of shin splints and an ankle Injury, was 13th in the state meet. However, he ran his j best state time ever — a 13:32 clocking on the 2.5 mile course. ’ AI Floeter, who led the Cougars by placing sixth in { 13:25, and Dave Seibel, 15th in 13:32. also are individual 1 success stories. Volimer pointed out, “Floeter cut one minute and Seibel 73 seconds off their time of a year ago in the state meet.” 'Rick Martiny, the Cougars’ second best finisher at Kettle I Moraine where he was 12th in 13:31, also saved his best for j last. “Rick’s weight was a little up eariy in the season, but j this was his best race. It was also the first time he’s ever | beaten Stommel,” Volimer said. ■Campbellsport’s victory in the state meet surprised even VoBmer. “I figured we might place three of our runners I In the first 11, but after that I really didn’t know,” he said, j As it was, the Cougars had four runners in the first 15, and their fifth runner, Larry Martiny, placed 28th. “Our first lour guys ran within seven seconds of each other,” Volimer pointed out.The importance of the fifth runner was dramatically 1 pointed out in the case of runner-up Luxemburg-Casco. Two Spartan runners were second and third, but their fifth runner could do no better tba 39th.Volimer added another sidelight to the meet when he paid tribute to Menomonee Falls North’s fallen champions. The Indians, who placed third, personally congratulated Campbeilsport, he said.“This was a very gracious display of sportsmanship. I intend to write North and ccmmend its runners for it,” Volimer said.
