Ten, Twenty,Oct. 31. 1943The passing of Sid Luckman and Sammy Baugh led their respective teams, the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins, to victories which preserved their unbeatenstatus in the National Professional Football League.The important Japenese air base at Rabaul on New Britain Island suffered another of General MacArthur’s sledgehammer blows when a strong force of Liberators escorted by Lightnings knocked down 45 enemy planes for certain, against only four losses.Butte’s weather took a turn toward winter when a maximum temperature of only 29 was recorded. The minimum was 20.Oct. 31, 1933Frank Benich, Joe Pinocco, “Foxy” Shea and Phil Casagranda returned to Walker-ville from a hunting expedition into Alaska Gulch. As trophies of the hunt they brought with them a 165-pound bear and a deer. The deer had been wounded by the hunters and for a time eluded them. At the end of a lengthy search the hunters discovered the bear standing near the wounded deer. All four fired simultaneously to kill the bruin.Horace Casey was elected president of Butte-Anaconda chapter, First Division Veterans. Other officers are Charles McAuliffe, past president; Charles Cutts, Anaconda, vice president; A. K. Serumgard, Helena, vice president; Karl J. Harney, secretary-treasurer. Those in attendance in addition to the officers were Isaac Morgan, Bill Martin, Oliver Fairbault, Charles McDonald, Harry, Lozon, Horace Garrity, Emmett Fogarty. Fred Doble, Ralph R. Smith, Art Dubie, John Ruhley and Dan Kavanaugh.
