THE TRIBUNE, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30,1997, PAGE 11defenseover PackersThe Caldwell Irish grabbedan early lead and used rugged, second-half defense on Saturday to defeat the Somerville Packers 14-6 for the junior varsity championship of the Burleson County Youth Football League.Caldwell finished the season unbeaten with a record of 5-0-1. Somerville finished the season at 2-2-1.For the Irish, the win was particularly gratifying afterfinishing winless in 1996.New Coach Vernon Scott said he was happy for his players. These kids worked realhard. We have been at this for several months. We have gotseveral kids coming back next year, and we hope to be good again next year, Scott said.Scott said some of his players will be moving up to thevarsity level.Scott said the 1997 seasonwas his first experience in a tackle youth football league, and he was really impressed with it.Tm just glad we made it, he said.Caldwell scored on its opening drive on a Chris Sleeth touchdown pass to RoderickHarris. Justin Courtney added a run for two points to give theIrish an 8-0 lead.Somerville countered on the next series with a 50-yard run by Samuel Roberson, but a two-point run failed as Sleeth made the stop.Moments later, Caldwell's Harris scampered for 18 yards to the Packer 25 for a critical first down. Two plays later, on third down at the 20, Harris added the final score.Caldwell's team members included Chris Sleeth, Roderick Harris, Justin Courtney, Marquinn Bryson, Joshua1997 JUNIOR VARSITY CHAMPIONS for the Burleson Irish.
