The outcome gave Carriage undisputed possession of first place with three . games against the league's weaker opposition remaining on the schedule. The loss dropped Lamar to third place, a notch behind Nevada, a team which it still has to meet.William (Dub) Cheney scored three of Carthage's touchdowns tomaintain the hot pace he has set most of the season. The diminutive halfback did not wait long before he broke into the scoring column, going over from the 1-yard line early in the first quarter. He added another at the end of a 40 -yard march in the third period by crossing over from the 3 and in the fourth scooted over from inside the 5-yard line after he and his teammates had brought the bail downfield 55 yards. To round out his evening, he converted the extra point.H. B. Davis, hard - hitting fullback, collected the other Carthage score with a 20 - yard run which climaxed a 64 - yard unbroken march following a pass - interception shortly before the gun sounded.Following Cheney’s first touchdown, Lamar, which has been high-scorer in league circles all season, tied the score at 6-6 on a 46 - yard romp by Dave Etkisson.
