3-A EAST REGIONALRESULTSCROSSLEY, PATS DOMINATE BOYS RACEThe boys meet was, from start-to-finish, John Cross-ley’s. The West Carteret senior successfully defended his regional title as he surged in front over the initial 300 yards and kept putting distance between himself and the field.Crossley, the state 3-A champion in the 800-meter run in track and field last spring, galloped over the 5K course in 16:05, three seconds from topping his career best.“It was hard because I knew the second half ofthe race was going to hurt, so I knew if I took it out, my time was going to be where it was supposed to be,” Crossley said. “In wind like this, that’s fine.” Crossley’s pace also helped out the Big East triumvirate of Rocky Mount’s Mason Holt,Whitehead and Southern Nash’s Nepolian Patel as they maintained a steady pace behind him.“My plan was just to stick with him and maybe push him the second or third mile but he took that chance away from me,” said Big East champion Holt, who was second in16:52.Whitehead, who set a Northern Nash freshman record of 16:53 in his third-place finish, said Crossley’s pace certainly helped him.“It gave me a push,” he said. “I pretty much thought I could catch Mason so I thought I could have a chance at the end.” Knights head coach Jeff Dodriil said his pre-race advice to the three runners familiar with the course was to stick together.“At the beginning you had Mason, Stephen and Nepolian just working together and that’s what I told them, that if those three can work together, they can help each other out,” said Dodriil. “Because they’ve been doing • it all year long and they know how each othermade the state meet.”But it didn’t come easy for Patel, who landed his third state berth in rough fashion. Patel had fallenback to sixth place as he sprinted to the finish line, literally stumbling over it as he narrowly held off Grant Hufham of South Brunswick. Meet officials had to help Patel to his feet and he later received treatment from the medical personnel on the scene.“My first mile was like a 5:05 and second mile was like 10:30 and then I was just dead,” admitted Patel. “The only thing that kept me going was that I didn’t want this to be my last race my senior year, so I just wanted to finish. I kept going.”He attributed his struggle to lack of hydration and too much studying.“I had no water in me so I was really fatigued,” he said. “I was up studying AP (Advanced Placement) all night lone and then Iwas like, ‘Oh yeah, I have a meet today.’”West Carteret also re-ran, so when (Crossley) was out there and if they worked together, they could all three run a fastas boys regional champion while Northern Nash took third to earn a state meet berth. Results from Saturday’s N.C.
