Tigers edge HurricanesBelter traded to Blazers for 17-year-old defencemahMEDICINE HAT — The defendingWestern Hockey League champion Lethbridge Hurricanes dominated play, but came up one goal short as they were edged 3-2 by the Medicine Hat Tigers Tuesday night.Hurricanes held a distinct edge in shots on goal, 36-23, including 12-1 in the second period, but could only beat Tiger goaltender Dustin Schwartz twice.The loss stretched the Hurricane s’ winless streak to four games.Hurricanes will look to break out tonight when they host the win less Edmonton Ice at 7 p.m. at the Sportsplex.Ice come into the game with a 0-11-1 record.In Medicine Hat, Tigers led 1-0 after one period of play on a power play gnal by Curtis Huppe.After a scoreless second period, ’Canes’ Shane Willis finally beat Tiger goalie Dustin Schwartz just 1 ;03 into the third, hut Tigers came right back with Lethbridge native Ryan Finnerty scoring his first WHL goal at 3:12.Hurricanes tied the game again at 6:03 when Marck Ivar. scored from the slot at 6:03. However, only 16 seconds later the Tigers scored the winner when Juson Chimera connected.’Canes pressed for the equalizer, but Schwartz came up big again, this time making saves off Paul Elliott and Sha-kotko.Meanwhile, the 'Canes have traded 20-ycar-old defence man Shane Belter to the Kamloops Blazers for 17-year-old defenceman Thomas Scantlebury and future considerations. The trade reduces the 'Canes’ 20-year-olds to Willis, Mark Smith and Ryan Hoople.Scantlebury is a six-foot-one, 195' pound lefthanded bluelincr from Bvrtle, Man., who played 36 games for the Blazers last season, collecting one goal, two assists and 99 penalty minutes.This season, Scantlebury has played all 12 games for the Blazers, collecting two assists and 25 penalty minutes.“It is a sad day for 1 he Hurricane organization to say goodbye to a player who was such a huge part of our championship team in Shane Beherf ’ said Hurricane coach and general manager Bryan Maxwell. “With our overage situation the way it was, we had to make a move and we know we are sending Shane to another first-class organization in Kamloops. Also, we're delighted to acquire 17-year-old Scantlebury. We feel he is a solid d-man and will be a big part of our future.’ ’Belter spent just under a year with the Hurricanes after being acquired from the Seattle Thundcrbirds for Dave Taylor last December.Hurricanes also announced they have released 19-year-old goaltender Wes Schneider. Schcider was also a member for the 1997 WHL champion Hurricanes, but did not see any playing time after the team acquired Blaine Russel! last season.
