At right, Dwight Davis (No. 65) celebrates along with his Melrose teammates following their playoff win over Mountainair on Saturday.Melrose stomps Moutainair in playoffNEWS JOURNAL STAFFMELROSE - The Melrose Buffaloes moved one step closer in, their attempt to take the six-man football state championship two years running with their 46-20 win over the Mountainair Mustangs Saturday afternoon.The Buffaloes, 6-2 on the year and ranked 12th in the nation, dominated the field early in the game with an interception by Melrose’s Wes Morgan on the third play of the Mustang’s opening possession. On the Buffaloes first offensive play of the game, Morgan headed for the end zone and opened up the scoreboard with a 48-yard touchdown run. Morgan also put the ball* up for the two-point conversion, giving the Buffaloes the early 8-0 lead.The Mustangs struggled on their next possession with a fumble recovery just outside their end zone. The following play belonged to Melrose again as the Buffaloes’ Dwight Davis wrapped up a Mustang ball carrier in the end zone, picking up the safety and bringing the score to 10-0.The Mustangs opened up the second quarter, moving the ball 24 yards in five plays. However, on the next play after a Buffalo time-out, the Mustangs gave up the ball with the fumble recovery by the Buffaloes’ Calvin Downey at the Mustang 35-yard line.The next play saw Morgan again taking the ball into the end zone for the score. The two-point conversion attempt was good, bringing the Buffalo lead to 18-0.The Mustangs powered back quickly on the next possession, with the Mustang’s Alex Garcia handling a short, hopping kick at their own 39-yard line. The next play saw Shaun Lambert launch a long bomb to Garcia, who took it in for the score. Lambert booted the two-point conversion, closing the Buffalo lead to 10.The last scoring drive of the half was engineered by the Buffaloes from their own 22-yard line. Morgan picked up 10 yards on the first play, with Jeremy Black breaking out to the left on second-and-5 to pick up the 48-yard touchdown for the Buffaloes. The two-point conversion attempt failed to split the uprights, leaving the score 24-8 going into the half.The Buffaloes opened the second half at their 15-yard line and moved the ball into Mustang territory, only to have a loose ball recovered by the Mustang’s Lambert at their own 29-yard line. The Mustangs were unable to capitalize on the turnover, giving up possession after only four plays for four yards.The Mustangs were able to put together one scoring drive in the third quarter with a Lambert pass to the Mustang’s DwaineSalvino, who was able to run right and cut back to the left for the touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt by the Mustangs was blocked, leaving the score at 24-14The fourth quarter belonged to the Buffaloes with touchdown runs by Dwight Davis and Jeremy Black. Morgan was able to complete only one of the two opportunities for two-point conversions, putting the BufTaloes up 46-14 with just under 2 minutes left in the game.However, the Mustangs were not ready to go home yet, and started their final offensive drive from their own 32-yard line. On fourth-and-14 on their own 34-yard line, the Mustang’s Lambert let go of a long pass for Gabriel Lucero, who carried the ball into the end zone with only 7 seconds left in the game.The two-point conversion attempt was broken up, giving the BufTaloes the win for the afternoon.After the game, Mustang’s head coach Dale Means gathered his team around him on the field to talk about next week’s semifinal game against Roy. “They want it bad, you can’t let up. We gotta take it one week at a time,” he said.The Buffaloes will go up against the Roy Longhorns next Saturday in the semifinal matchup at Roy.
