The Bears lost in thesemifinals last year.‘‘I would • have to say West Branch is the favorite,” Woepking said. ‘‘They’ve got a lot of playoff experience, plus the two teams that made the finals last year, Parkersburg and Lake City, aren’t in the playoffs this year. They’re probably the bestteam in the playoffs.”West Branch won the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference, outscoring their opponents 311-97.“We have to control their running game,” Woepking said.m“Their quarterback, J.D. Grimm, has the most explosive speed on the team.”Columbus has two running backs who have carried for more than 1,000 yards. Brian Clark has 1,080 yards on 145 carries. Marius Johnson has 1,040 yards on 13$ carries.Columbus was one of four SEI Superconference North Division teams to make the playoffs.“We think our schedule gives us an advantage,” Woepking said. “When we divided into two divisions, I felt we had the stronger division. Playing those kind of teams gives us an advantage because we know what it’s like to play tough opponents.”WACO (8-1) at Olln-Oxford Junction (8-1) — The WACOdefense may be seeing double against the Lions in their Class A game.Olin-Oxford Junction runs a run-and-shoot offense, with quarterback Matt Walshire usually throwing to his favorite receiver, twin brother Tom.“We have to stop those two,”WACO coach Lonnie Powers said. “They like to hook up in the passing game, so we have to contain them.”It will be the second straight run-and-shoot team the Warriors will face. In the final game of the regular season, Lone Tree ran the offense against WACO, but the Warriors intercepted five passes.“Lone Tree’s offense isn’t as good as Olin-Oxford Junction’s, but at least we’re familiar with it and we know what we’re upagainst,” Powers said.WACO will be led by running back Cole Adrian, who finished the season with more than 1,400 yards rushing.“Cole’s done a great job for us all year,” Powers said. “Our running game has made the difference for us.”Mount Pleasant (6-2) vs. Cedar Rapids Regis (8-1) at Marlon — Powers may not be the only one seeing double. Mount Pleasant coach Bob Jensen said Regis is comparable to Ottumwa, the Panthers’ lastopponent.“They are about the same sizeas Ottumwa and they have the same kind of quickness,” Jensen said. “We’re going to have trouble matching up with them. We’re going to make some changes in personnel on the defensive line so we can get some more size on them.”The Panthers missed a chance to clinch the Southeast Seven Conference title when they lost to Ottumwa last Friday. Jensen said the team was down after the game, but things changed when the players practiced Sunday.“They were pretty quiet when they came into the locker room,” Jensen said. “But after I had a little talk with them, they were ready to go.”Jensen said while Regis is similar to Ottumwa, the Panthers will have a slightly different game plan.“Offensively, we’re going to try to spread out their defense, just like we did against Ottumwa,” he said. “But we're not going to play conservatively. On defense, we’re going to try to attack from the line and try not to make as many mistakes as we did Friday.”
