rhigh school football focusCorbin vs. Middlesboro — enough saidBy JIM GRIESCHSports WriterCoach, is there any chance that the sub-par seasons will take away from the Middlesboro game?“Lord, no/ said Corbin coach Cotton Adams, “This is always a ball game. We only have two traditional games on our schedule, Somerset and Middlesbor-o. They are the only two we’ve played who haven’t been off the schedule in some years/Is it important?Oh, yeah. *IVe been around this game too many times/ said Adams. ‘This is one game I don’t have to do much talking. It comes with the game. It comes with Middlesboro/No matter what the record of either, this is the “Big Game/Adams has felt the emotion, the tension, in practice this week. He says the team is keyedup.“Forget about anything else/ he explained. “It’s Corbin and Middlesboro. Anytime we play Middlesboro, football, basketball, baseball, it’s the bi game of the year. Fvearound Corbin High School 25years, four years in high school,in the eighth grade, as a coach, this is the game/Without the post-season hype that each school has gone through many of the past several years, the players may feel some special signifigance this week.After all, a win over the enemv is a way to salve theiywounds of high expectations.A win would make things right heading into the “ofr season.And, a win would keep “bragging rights” in the right place.But, Middlesboro is a kind of team that has given the Red-hounds a lot of trouble this season.The Yellowjackets are big, they run the veer, and can throw just enough.Somerset and Wayne County are both very big teams. Both were able to drive the ball well on what has eventually become an injury-depleted team.Belfry runs the veer. It was the “outside veer that beat us at Belfry. They scored both touchdowns on that play/And, Adams respects Middlesboro, despite the Jackets’ 5-5 record coming into Friday’s match at Campbell Field.They are a lot bigger tiian we are,” he began. Their offensive line is massive. That’s what worries me. From tackle to tackle, no one is under 200 pounds. Their tackles are in the 230 range. And, the tight end is 6-6, 210. From tight end to backside tackle, they are nice size all across the front/He knows what to expect. The dive play.“Any veer team has to get the dive going. If it can do that, then it can get outside on the comer and pitch it in the veer option/ “Arid/ said Adams, “they can throw off it. But, he reads the inside veer, the outside veer. They (thecoaches) call a lot of dives and counter dives.”The game may come down to Corbin’s defense having to fight off the power blocking schemes by Middlesboro, not overcommitting on any one play, on being able to get to the right spot in time.Most of all, Adams wants to see “no stupid mistakes. The winner takes care of the ball. This game is always aggressive, and that brings aboutturnovers.Because of a lack of playoff opportunities this year, the game marks the final football appearance for several players. On offense, seniors Dewayne Steely, Brian Metzger, Brian Hinkle, Jeff Barnett, Ronnie Brockman, Arleigh Burke, and Gary McPherson are stepping out. Defensively, Kelly Farris, Shannon Sams, Metzger and (injured) Will Sears leave. Substitutes playing a final time for Corbin include: Jody Botner, Greg Foley, Kevin Park, Lany Martin, Mike Smith, and Mark Cathers.
