Thursday, October 28, 1971Moravia Defeats Centerville To A Cold 14*4The following was published this week by the Centerville Iowegian.Editor’s note: The following article first appeared in a Centerville newspaper 73 years ago relating the results of the Moravia -Centerville football game Jan. 1, 1893. It appeared 32 years later in the Moravia Union with the headlines Moravia football team downed Centerville on New Years Day, with a sub head, The two teams met on the fairground gridiron at Centerville, Jan. 1st, 1898, Score Moravia 14, Centerville 4.The editor of the Union had also added this note: From one who was present at the game on that date, we learned that the day was quite cold, there was snow on the ground and the Moravia team journeyed to Centerville in bobsleds.The game of football played here on the fairground on Saturday, Jan. 1st between the Moravia Athletic team and the Centerville High School team, called out a good crowd and much interest was manifested.After the line-up Centerville won the toss and took the west goal having the advantage of the wind. Moravia kicked off, Bashaw caught the ball and was immediately downed. Next he was given the ball and made a good end run. Greene then took the ball, touched it down with nearly a 40-yard run, the first touchdown being made in less than five minutes from thenow adopted the filed tactics of center rushes which method although slow, proved very efficient in protecting his four men who had very little experience in playing football. They succeeded in making their five yards every three downs which saved the ba'I. Centerville put up a good play and was game to the core, but it could not stand the center rushes of their weightier adversaries. Again the Centerville team secured the ball but soon lost it. At the end of the first half the score stood 6 to 4 in favor of Moravia. After rest Centerville kicked-off, Moravia caught Ihc ball and never lost it, thev made two touchdowns in the last half of the game which made the score stand 14 to 4 in favor of Moravia. All the Centerville boys played well, but those who distinguished themselves were, Easton, Greene, Sawyers and Bashaw. The Moravia team did excellent playing, S. W. and F. A. Tarr, M. D. Roberts and J. B. Ham distinguished themselves. While the game at times grew quite fierce and the interest intense, the verybest of feeling prevailed. The laurels taken from the Centerville athletes were not removed from old Appanoose county. The follow ing is the names and post office addresses of the Moravia team Icontum: E. E. Breese, S. W.
