Rend Lake College Basketball Promises An Exciting SeasonWith only two players on the Rend Lake Warrior-14 man basketball roster under six foot. Warrior Coach JimWaugh is certainly looking forward to having a height advantage on this years Rend I-ake squad.The added size has to help us on defense, where we had some problems last year.Waugh said.The team which began Its official practice sessions last week, with Coach Waugh and their new assistant coachJohn Kretz. Is preparing for their season opener against Danville Community College on November 21 The Warriors are facing what Waugh describes as one of their toughest schedules ever with 25 regular season games on tap. *One of the highlights of this season's Rend Lake Basketball is a trip to Florida which includes competition against two of the top teams of that state.The Warriors will plav at Chipola. Florida, on Jan. 3. and then go on to Gulf Coast. Florida on January 4.Of course we are looking forward to those* games hut out conference schedule is the most Important to us.” Waugh said.He also pointed but that Wabash Valley and Southeastern College might be two of thetoughest teams in the Southern Illinois College Conference thisseason.Last year we didn’t, make the kind of showing that was expected and I certainly hope we can bring a winning team to Rend Lake this year.” Waugh said.So far practice sessions have consisted of players going over basic fundamentals of the game, but Waugh adds that this year’s team promises to be a lot more agressive than last year’s.We’ve been fortunate to attract some excellent talent and this squad has certainly got the potential for a winning season. Some of that talent will be displayed on the court by plavers who are verv well known to southern Illinois basketball fans.Fric Forbv. of Benton, a fi’2 forward Gary Hutchcraft. or Wayne City, a fi’4 forward. Willie Jones, of Mt. Vernon, a fi’4 center. Hugh Moore, of West Frankfort 3 6’4 forward. Jeff Wilson of Mt. Vernon, a fi'7 center. Jay Sandusky, of Benton, a 6'3 guard. Mel Dog-fan, of Mt. Vernon, a fi'2 cen-te*\ Larry Cockrum. of Walton-vi’le. a 5‘10 guard, and Ron Stanart. a 5’11 guard from Ses-ser will be on the courts for the Warriors this yearIn addition to the local players on the Rend Lake squad. Waugh has several other standouts from outside the area. They are Jackie Smith, a «' guard, who started last season, and Kevin Rose, a fi forward, both from Terra Haute, tnd.. Chris Benetti. a 6'5 forward from Clinton. Ind.-’. Jim Bybee. a 6'6 forward from Universal. Ind. and Chuck Doty. a 6‘4 guard who reins from Tavernier. Florida.With only three players. Smith. Wilson, and Stanart. back from last year's team, the Warriors will certainly have a new look this season.One of the major improvements over last year is that we have a lot of depth. Waugh added.Many of the players will see plenty of action in more than one position, he said. The Warriors have about one month of practice ahead before this season’s opening game, and Waugh is ootimistic- about the uncoming season.After last year’s' 12-17 record.
