THE STAR-TH IRENE:.'Hi Thursday, October 26, 1*172Marian SuffersChampionships in three of thefour area conferences are still pretty much up in the air, after games last weekend that were pretty much down in the mud.Most of the favorites posted wins but had trouble doing so thanks to miserable weather last weekend, with one notable upset taking place in the lllini Eight to throw that conference into a two-way tie..'•IfMarian Catholic, which has been winning on a strong defensive effort week after week, finally bowed after five straight wins, 14-12 to Joliet East.MINUS STANDOUTS Joe Berg, Bob Towle and Charlie Grupp, the Spartans once again proved vulnerable to the big play as Joliet quarterback Eric White threw touchdown passes to Steve Scott that covered three and 30 yards. Five of theVsix touchdowns scored against Marian this year have come on passes.Plaeekicker Ed Bauerle booted the extra points that shoved East to a 14-6 halftime lead and eventually provided the winning margin. The losers thus dropped out of the conference lead, as Joliet Catholic and I^ekport are now tied for first at 4-0.
