By Alan AdamsThe Canadian PressTORONTO — Hockey Canada wants its own seat on international hockey’s governing body, but chairman Ian Macdonald says the move isn't designed to push Alan Eagleson into the forefront of the International Ice Hockey Federation. The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association controls both Canadian seats in the IIHF congress and Macdonald recently wrote federationEresident Gunther Sabetzki seeking is support in relinquishing one of the seats to Hockey Canada.Sabetzki surprised delegates to the IIHF’s fall meeting earlier this month when he alluded to Macdonald's request in his opening address.Sabetzki also raised some possibilities for Eagleson — who has been marshalling support in the international community — when he mentioned the likelihood of the IIHF opening a North American office.Eagleson, a Hockey Canada director and its international negotiator, is job-hunting. After 24 years as executive director of the NHL Players’ Association ends, he retires Dec. 31.Sabetzki's 13-year run as IIHF president ends in 1994, maybe sooner because the 76-year-old German is in poor health. He spent most of the Canada Cup tournament in hospital with heart problems.CAHA president Murray Costello, who admittedly is suspicious of Ea-gleson's intentions, was surprised bySabetzki’s comments.“I told him (Sabetzki) the only people who will assign seats is the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association.”Since he’s CAHA president, Costello occupies one or two Canadian seats. The second seat is designated according to the business at hand. When the IIHF is discussing matters involving Hockey Canada, either Macdonald or Eagleson sit in the meetings.Sabetzki is powerless to assigning seats issued to member countries. That leaves the issue, if there is one, to be resolved by Hockey Canada and the CAHA.The CAHA and Hockey Canada are separate bodies with separate agendas.Eagleson confirmed he's interested in a position with the IIHF. Eagleson, Sabetzki and NHL president John Ziegler are reported to have major plans for international hockey. In 1994, I’ll be 61 years old,” Eagleson said this week. I will not be a volunteer for the next four years, travelling around the world in an effort to do good things for the IIHF.“If I can do something between then and now or after 1994, which is good for hockey and pays some bills for Alan Eagleson, I’m happy to consider it.If a Canadian was to run for Sabetzki’s job, he would need the CAHA’s blessing and it is unlikely Eagleson would get Costello’s support over Gord Renwick of London, Ont., a long-time IIHF vice-president.......
