No. 3 WB-ND looks to stay perfectBy Craig SeskerThe Hawk EyeWest Burlington-Notre Dame football coach Bill Nelson sent a message to his unbeaten football team at Tuesday’s practice.Nelson said the session was more intense than normal.“It was the most vicious practice we have had all year,” Nelson said. “We really got after them. We were on them constantly to create a level of intensity for this week. We didn’t accept anything less than a maximum effort.”Even at 8-0, the Falcons may need that type of effort Friday when they close the regular season against Winfield-Mount Union. Under the sharing agreement between West Burlington and Notre Dame, the game will be played at Harold Tackleson Field on the Nikes campus.Nelson said his team, which moved up to No. 3 in the Class 1A state rankings, needs to win for a number of reasons. West Burlington last went through the regular season unbeaten in three straight years (1981-83) and has been absent from the state playoffs since 1988.WB ND is 6-0 in the SEISuperconference’s South Division and 8-0 overall. Winfield-Mount Union is 3-3, 44.“We need to win it to win the conference outright,” Nelson said. “As far as the playoff situation we also need to win. West Branch has already wrapped up one of four spots in Section 4 of Class 1A with Columbus, Pekin, Iowa Valley and the Falcons battling for the final three spots.If all four teams win, Pekin will not make the playoffs. Iowa Valley must defeat Sigourney, which is ranked third in Class 2A, to qualify.For now, West Burlington-Notre Dame is concentrating on the Wolves. Winfield Mount Union is a sophomore-dominatedclub.“We have only three seniors,” Wolves coach Joe Peters said. “We talked about playing for pride right now and playing for a winning record. That game (a 12-10 loss to Van Buren last week) knocked us out of the playoffs.”Sophomore tailbacks Chris Parkhurst and Casey Jones along with senior flanker Jon Richenberger key the Wolves running attack. Parkhurst has run for 426 yards, Jones hasadded 329 yards and Richenberger has gained 228 yards. Richenberger has also caught eight passes for 105 yards.Sophomore quarterback Klay Edwards, who is 6-foot-7, directs the offense. Edwards has completed 25 of 80 passes for 359yards. He has thrown for four touchdowns and suffered seven interceptions.We need to control the ball,” Peters said. “We have to keep the ball away from them and not give up the big play. I think we have a good chance.“It would be a big win for us. We haven’t beat a team with a winning record this year.”Nelson said his team can’t afford to take the Wolveslightly.“They are a good football team,” Nelson said. They are the kind of team that will give us trouble. They run the ball and play good defense. They are young and looking for a winning season. It would be a great way for them to finish their season.”Senior halfback Joel Rexroth and senior fullback Ian MacLearn continue to carry much of the offensive load for the Fal- , cons. Rexroth has rushed for 1,239 yards and 13 touchdowns while MacLearn has run for 543!yards and six scores.
