He carried the ball 10 times for 99 and completed three of, four passes for '43. For once, Gil! Johnson, the great Southern Meth-Jodist passer, was a washout. He. tried five, had two intercepted and completed one for a loss of eight yards.Kyle Rote and Dick McKissack of Southern Methodist were the second best ball-earriers with 40 yards each, Rote’s coming on 14 runs and McKissack’s on 10.A crowd of more than 59,000 was in the Cotton Bowl for the game played as a feature of the Texas State Fair.The first Southern Methodist touchdown came in the last minutes of the opening period and was on a 77-ryard drive with a 2l)-yard pass from Walker to Kyle Rote scoring. Rote and Walker rammed the line for four yards then Walker passed to Raleigh Blakely on the goal line for the score. A pass from Walker to Rote for 16 yards set the hall on the Santa Clara nine from where Rote rammed center and cut back over tackle for the score. Walker kicked the point.SMU threatened repeatedly the remainder of the period but couldn't score again until late in the fourth quarter. The next Methodist touchdown was engineered by Roberts' passing, His throws swept the Mustangs to the 10-yard line where he carried around end for the score.
