That’s when Piner began reeling him in.“I knew it was mine when coach told me around the 2-mile mark '‘You got this/” Piner said. “That’s when I got my confidence going. Higgs is a really great runner. Today, however, it was not about speed but about pace.“It’s pacing, not racing.”Piner caught Higgs around the 2.3-mile mark and pulled ahead, winning with a time of 18 minutes flat. Higgs was second, 29 seconds behind.It was the first time this season that Higgs has failed to win.“He ran a good race.I will give that to him,” Higgs said. “I didn’t.”Higgs said his nose got stopped up after 2 miles and it made breathing difficult for him. But he refused to use it as an excuse .“He beat me,” Higgs said. “No excuse at all. I started off running well, then it started catching up to me. Losing now will only make me stronger.”Beddingfield coach Bruce Pike agreed.“That will be a big motivation for him,” Pike said. “He knows he should berunning better this time ofthe year.” IRBeddingfield won the boys team title with 33 points. Fike was second at 47, Hunt third with 48 and Wilson Christian Academy fourth with 97 points.Along with Higgs, the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference champion Bruins had freshman Jacob Vamell ? in third (18:45) and senior Tyler Amerson in fifth (19:16) earn All-Wilson County honors.Pike said his team ran the kind of race it needed to beat its county rivals.“It’s great to get the team title,” he said. “I’d like to see the times be a little bit better, but that gives them something to work on with regionals coming up.”Other boys racers who finished in the top seven were Hunt’s Nathan Heath in fourth (19:04) and Trevor Purvis in sixth (19:25) and Fike’s Omar Perdomo in seventh (19:28).g The one-point margin for Fike over Hunt was big, Griffith said.“Yeah, it’s always nice to get a win over Hunt,” he said. “It came down to some sprints there in the back of our top finishers.
