By JIM STADTER Sports EditorBremen pulled a stunning upset in the medley relay to open the first SICA West conference swimming meet for girls at Midlothian Tuesday night, but the rest of the competition held true to form asCoach Marsha Murphy’s Sandburg swimmers rolled up 53 points to annex the team title.Sandburg won only three events, but scored in 10 of 11 to amass its winning total. It was a hotly contested battle for second place as just three points separated the rest of theOak Forest’s Karen Walsh and TF North freshman Dawn Kodighiero won two events apiece while Kankakee West stole the team thunder in theSICA East-South conference swim meet Tuesday at Evergreen Park.Tinley Park, the only team to defeat Westview this season, won three events and just missed taking the title, scoring 208 points to 211 for the winners.It came down to the 400 freestyle relay, a race in which a Hillcrest foursome hit the finish first in a fantastic time of 4:06.8. Westview’s third place effort, with Tinley fifth,Hinr'hpH thp titlpwith 29 and Keavis with 28.TF South, behind double winners Shelly Zygowicz and Joann Botterman, led the blue ribbon derby with four first places. Oak I .awn and Bremen each won two events.BREMEN’S MEDLEY relay unit of Cathy Diddens, Joyce Stadter, Julie Plowman and Karen Adrian thrilled the home crowd with a winning effort of 2:08.0 in the first event on the card.Seeded third in the event, the Bremen girls knocked 4.9 seconds off their best previous time to pull the stunner. Top seeded Oak Lawn settled for second place, while SandburgEllen Wuellner of Hillcrest won by nearly three full seconds, and shaved nearly 11 seconds off their best time of the year. Oak Forest Coach Vita Meyer, whose team was second, said it best when she said the Hillcrestgirls “were really smoking.”Oak Forest had three victories, two by Walsh and one by senior diver Cathy Kaye, who scored 246.70 points to win by more than 20. Here again, Westview depth paid off. A 2-3 finish offset the 5-6 effort of Tinley’s Debbie Bettenhausen and Patti Hallahan.Walsh, a junior, won the 200was fourth in the four-team race and failed to score for the first and only time all night.Only the first three relay teams scored. In the individual events, the first five places scored points while the first six received awards. Since this was the first running of the meet, all winning efforts went on the books as SICA West conference records.Sandburg had taken an early lead as Mary Byars won the diving title with a score of 274.62 during the afternoon portion of the meet. Bremen took a shortlived lead with its medley relay w in, but Sandburg regained the upper hand in the next, event, 200-yard freestyle, and con-free (Denise Nelzel), 100 backstroke (laurel Hall) and a 2-3 finish in diving paced the winners.A star was born in TF North’s Kodighiero, who is a state contender as a frosh. Her times were startling 2:18.8 in the 200 IM and 1:11.2 in the breaststroke. Tinley’s VickiShaw added a second to herachievements in that race. Tinley also got a strong third from Muys in the backstroke.Oak Forest, third with 166 points, got additional pointstinued to add to its total the rest of the night.ZYGOWICZ GAINED the first of her two wins in the 200 freestyle, with a time of 2:09.6, but a two-three finish by Debbie Macey and Theresa Athy vaulted Sandburg into first place for good.Zygowicz notched her second win with a 6:02.9 clocking for the 500 freestyle, and her TF' South teammate Botterman doubled up in the 50 and 100 freestyles, with respective times of 27.0 and 59.0.Sandburg won the meet going away, picking up its second and third blue ribbon efforts in the last two events on the card. Lisa Krula sped to victory in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:19.2 and the freestyle relay team put the finishing touch on the team title romp.The quartet of Cindy Vos, Kathy Brennan, Athy and Macey covered the 400-yard distance in 4:09.0. That’s the onlyword to describe the Homewood-Flossmoor’s girl swim team which pounded six other squads to win the SICA North division championship Tuesday evening at Dolton.Kathy Shea, Sue Ahrendt and Helen Lindstrom won twoevents apiece for H-F as the winners took 10 out of 11 to rack up a whopping 312 points. Thornndge finished second, far behind with 236, followed by Thornwood, Richards, Thornton, Eisenhower and Bloom.The only victory denied H-F came courtesy of Thornridge diver Maxine Mastey, whose 256.54 points earned her a win over Carol Kulczyk of Thornwood and teammate SherryFirman.OTHER THAN that, it was all H-F. Shea won the 100 freestyle and backstroke with times of: 58.904 and 1:07.460. Ahrendt swam to victories in the 50 free ( :26.449) and 100 butterfly (1:04.293). Lindstroms’s pair came in the 200 free (2:14.651) and 500 (6:05.775).Other individual winners forH-F were I^urie Scherer, a10 of2:38.895 in the 200 IM and Kitty Voigt (1:22.693) in the 100 breaststroke.In addition, H-F swept both relay events. Shea, Sharon Benigni, Ahrendt and Linda Vax won the 200 medley in 2:05.604, ahead of Thornridge and Richards. Then Vax, Suzanne Shea, Carolyn Duffy and Ruth Wickersham wrapped up the victorious evening with a win in the 400 free in 4:19.775.In a good show of power, H-F landed two swimmers in the top five of every individual eventexcept one. Seconds went to Duffy in the 100 and 200 free, Scherer in the backstroke andBenigni in the backstroke.Thornridge combined Mastey’s diving win plus numerous thirds and fourths torate over the rest of the pack.
