OverBy H. L PHILLIPS'Block That Mike!*Ike or Adlai could get a lot of votes by coming out against the use of radio helmets for directing football plays, a practice adopted by some pro teams. This trend could spread, with hundreds of school and college teams dependent on electronics rather than ability, secret practice, good weather and the college bands. For the first time in football history, some coaches in pro football are giving instructions to their players by radio this season. Not with complete success. We understand a certain battered quarterback signalled “What do I do next?’* and instead of receiving the coach’sreply got accidentally tuned into a political speech and received the words, “Don’t delay* Go now and register as a civic duty.'*We anticipate the following news on quarterbacks any week now:“Leideranarfle is one of the finest quarterbacks in the game, if properly wired. He suffered from static interference in the last two games, however, and got nowhere with his team.“Butterball Is another top grid star when his radio is functioning, but his helmet has not been in good form lately and his eleven lost a close game, due to a foolish attempt to have a radio repairman fix him up during the game,“Quiggle ranks with these two quarterbacksbut does not appear to be the star he was before he was operated by dials and gizmoes. He was self-reliant and resourceful last year, but since he put on a radio helmet he has seemed to depend too much on airwave pro* gramming. Last Saturday he lost a game because he was not sure whether he was listening to his coach or to the Lassie program. At times he might have been calling plays oninstructions from ‘Queen for a Day/ we thought.’*We fear the worst. Ultimately radio may take over the cheer leaders and somebody will introduce an IBM machine that will sing the college songs.
