Usually a battle among equals, the fight for national chess supremacy almost always goes downto the wire.A few months after the championship’s apparent cancellation, the newly formed Seattle Chess Foundation stepped into the breach. It was announced that the tournament would be held after all, with the foundation picking up the tab.Recently played in Seattle, the event was once again closely contested. In the men’s section three former title-holders - Joel Benjamin, Alexander Shabalov and Yasser Seirawan - tied for firstin prize money. In the women’s tournament, Camilla Baginskaite and Elina Groberman shared first and a purse of $14,000.It was an impressive inaugural event for the ingenue foundation, which has defined for itself a dual function: supporting scholastic chess as well as professional events such as the championship. The foundation says playing chess “expands the cognitive ability of children. An increase in cognitive learning translates into an increase in self-esteem, self-confidence and self-worth.” It promises to “encourage and promote chess for every child,” but “specifically to focus on encouraging young women and minorities to fully participate in this activity and to develop specific programs and opportunities to attract these groups.”Below is a critical win by Shabalov against John Fedorowicz.Shabalov Fedorowicz1. e42.
