Page 24 -THE MESSENGER. Athens, Ohio—Sun., Oct. 22, 1972By PAUL HAGEN Messenger Student ReporterOn Monday of last week, Ohio University football coach BillHess summed up the approaching Virginia Tech game. “The fans are going to see alot of passes thrown and a lot ofpasses completed against us, “the Bobcat grid boss had predicted. “I’m not saying we re going to lose, but the keyTHE—Messenger Photo by Don DryOhio University rvnning back, runs through a Homecoming Game with the Gobblers Saturday ig with two other Bobcats, while Bill Ellenbogen Gobblers won the contest 53-21.to our winning will not be stopping Don Strock entirely, but keeping him from completing too many for touchdowns.”Saturday, 13,344 fans in Peden Stadium saw Strock attempt passes, Strock complete passes, and unfortunately for Ohio complete a school-record four passes for touchdowns as the Gobblers routed the ’Cats 53-21 in the annual Homecoming game.Strock also set a Virginia Tech mark for career touchdown passes with 22.Other record-setting performances on this overcast afternoon included Tech school records for touchdown passes caught in a game (Ricky Scales, three), most receptionsfor a career (Mike Bumop, 76) and team marks for touchdown passes in one game (4) and most first downs by passing (14).The game also set the dubious record of most points ever scored by a nonconference team in Peden Stadium.Strock teamed up with his talented corps of recevers for 307 yards on 14 completions. He zone.attempted 24 passes. Tops on the receiving end for the Gobblers were Bumop (four for 86), Scales (five for 87), Steve Galloway (two for 85) Don Reel (one for 46) and Nick Colobro (3 for 43).Tech scored first after taking the opening kickoff. The Gobblers moved the ball easily downfield until the Ohio defense got tough and stopped the drive at the 31. Dave Strock, Don’s brother, attempted a 48-yard field goal which was short, but illegal use of hands was called on the 'Cats and Virginia had another life. Strock took best advantage of the reprieve and capped the 78-yard drive with a 34-yard pass to Bumop. Tech had the lead, an edge they would not relinquish. With Virginia Tech ahead 17-0 early in the second quarter, Ohio briefly rallied and looked as though it may have taken control of the game. With 12:45 showing on the clock and Ohio faced with a fourth and one on the Tech 20. Rich Bevly faked a handoff to L. C. Lyons then pulled the ball back and sprinted into the end-Eight Inducted SaturdayThe fake was so good that it fooled the Techmen, the spectators, the press box and. unfortunately, the officials who blew the play dead when Lyons was met at the line of scrimmage. The ball was brought back, but Ohio was awarded the first down at the 19.Bevly was injured on theplay, and Greg Deyton came in to replace him at quarterback. Two running plays netted six yards and a pass from Deyton to freshman Rich Lilienthal took the ball down to the four. Three consecutive carries by Lyons punched the ball over the line for the Cats, and Ohio waswithin striking range. The turn of events seemed to unnerve Virginia Paul Adams bobbled Gary Homer’s kickoff, but recovered his own fumble. On the first play from scrimmage, Strock muffed the snap from center and lost six yards On the next play, glue-fingered Don Reel allowed a sure touchdown pass to bounce off his chest. Finally, Bert Dam-pier intercepted for Ohio, his twelfth career interception tying the school record set by Mike Schott in 1967-69It appeared as though Ohio might be coming back, but such visions were quickly dispelled. The Tech defense toughened, Homer attempted a 35-yard field goal that was blocked and the Gobblers marched 74 yards in 11 plays to go on top 24-7 with 2:32 left in the half.In the remaining time, Virginia recovered a fumble on Ohio’s 26, and two plays later tacked the final score of theperiod. With Bevly on crutches and Deyton at the helm, Ohioplayed well for the remainder of the game. Deyton completed seven of 17 passes on the daygood for 129 yards.Captain Dave Juenger movedfrom his tight end spot toflanker and caught two passesfor 76 yards. Freshman RichLilienthal filled in for Juengerat end, and caught two for 13yards.MAC StatisticsSCORE BY PERIODSVirginia Tech .........17 14 7 IS—53Ohio Univ..............0 7 0 14-21Attendance 13,344SCORING SUMMARY Tech — Burnop, 34. pass from Don Strock (Dave Strock. kick)Tech — Scales, 11. pass from Don Strock (Dave Strock, kick)Tech — Dave Strock. 23, field goal Ohio — Lvons, 1, run (Homer, kick) Tech — Rarber 9. run (Dave Strock, kick *Tech — Scales 23. pass from Don Strock (Dave Strock. kick)Tech — Scales IB pass from Don Strock (Dave Strock, kick)Ohio — Deyton 1 run (pass incomplete )Tech — Adams, 1, run (Anans. rum Ohio — Hummer. 4. run (Juenger, pass from Dayton)Tech — Barber. 4. run (Dave Strock. kick)FINAL TEAM STATISTICSOhio Va.
