SHERIFF STOPS BUOT IN NEW YORK.Considered the Bout a Prize Fight andNot Boxing and Refuses to Let It Go On.New York, Oct. 21.—Sheriff Julius Harburger won thg decision over Jim Stewart and Gunboat Smith at Madison Square Garden tonight. The little peacemaker of New York county got Into the ring right before the beginning of the eighth round and refused to let the bout go on. He considered it brutal, inasmuch as Stewart had been floored five times in seven rounds. They brought Stewart into the ring at the close of the show and then there was more trouble. Joe Humphreys announced that Jim wanted to show his friends that he wasn't a bit hurt. Sheriff Hariurger then got into the ring a second time and said:I have no explanation to make. I owe no apology to the people who are unfriendly to decency. I am desirous of giving you decent boxing in this community and as sheriff I will not allow brutality. Stewart was not only knocked out, but he is still unfit to fight. I will not be, bulldozed by the management. This was a prize flght and not boxing, and I stoped It and I’ll stop It again.Larry McCoy and Mickey Devine tried for a knockout In six rounds. Larry’s optics were in deep mourning at the end, but he won nevertheless, clearly oiitboxing Devine.Joe Thomas of New Orleans easily whipped Willie Beecher. Then came Joe Seiger and Eddie Shevlin. Billy Joh flopped it in the third round when Seiger seemed to be on the point of going out.
