BOXERS SEEM SHY OF JEFF CLARKE.If the plans of Tommy Dixon succeed, Mr. Jeff Clarke, the home smoke, will appear before the Queen City Ath-letlc club In Springfield, against “Knockout” Brown, the middleweight. This “Knockout” Brown Is not the original 'Knockout,” but he is quite original In his work. Brown is the man who won over Jack Dillon in a battle some time ago. Dillon claims the mid' dleweight championship. If Clarke should get on with Brown and win, he la fairly entitled to some matches with combatants in the mezzanine department. However, It will be remembered that Jefferson qualified ln_ that division when he won over Joe Jeannette, the noted heavyweight, In six rounds in Pittsburg, Pa., on I,abor day.At present there seems to be some hitch in the proceedings. Dixon says that Brown must make 158 poundn ringside to appear before the club against the noted Joplin boxer. Ac- j cording to the dope imparted last night on the subject by Dixon, Brown will make an effort to make the weight. I Tf Brown Is anything like the rest of mlddlewelghts, he will not want to meet Clarke. The others. Including Moha, Dillon and Klauss are fighting «hy of Clarke, rather than fighting him. They all draw the color line, but is it the color line that Is keeping them from meeting him?
