in many hard-fought games, and several have, been stars. They hope to play their first game next week.NORTH 5 A I.KM VS. LI/.TON.North Salem and Li/ton had trouble on the Jatter’e grounds in Saturday’s game. A special account received from Liztou says: “North Salem high school came to Liztou Saturday afternoon to play with the Lizton 60I100I team, bringing some eighteen or twenty fellows, and when they learned that' Lizton had just barely enough to play, insisted on playiug full 35-minute halves, knowing their advantage. Captain Ball would agree to nothing longer than 20-minute halves, justly claiming that it would he unfair to pitIris eleven men against the twenty for••so long halves. The game began afier the toss-up was won by Salem, they choosing to defend the west goal and [living Liztou the kick-of!'. Lizton kicked the ball to their 25 yard line, following with such speed that the Salem player who secured it was downed almost before he had straightened up. After three desperate efforts to gain live yards, Salem was forced to surrender the ball. Lizton lined up flt;-r scrimmage, gave signals and went through the Salem line like a bear in a cauebrake, and in the second down so completely tore Salem to pieces that the full back was forced through the Salem interference to a clear held, and he (Oscar Hnlei secured a touchdown, also kicking goal, all in five minutes. ThtB was a stunning blow to the Salem ites, especially to those who imagine that no one knows anythingabout the game unless he lives at North Salem. Salem became desperate and resolved to resort to desperate means to retrieve what they had lost. During the line-up for the first scrimmage after the second kickoff and after Salem bad begun its signals, the umpire called “Hold” and ran in between the lines. Three Lizton boys rose up, and the others, expecting to obey the order, relaxed their vigor. Salem at once snapped the ball into play with the umpire between the lines, and went around the egd for a good gain. The unsportsmanlike action was at once seen by the referee, and Salem was forced to bring the ball back to the scrimmage line over the protect of the umpire, who openly boated that be would even up by imjosiug fines. On the first lineup following he imposed a penalty of live y;ds on Lizton for what he claimed to b * an off side play in the lineup before the ball was snapped. The writer do cm not say this did not take place, us »t requires a very good eye to determine when a player’s finger is half an inch across an imaginary line. 15e that as it may. It is not the penalty to which the boys objected but the spirit in which it wjts given. They at once denounced the ruling as unsportsmanlike and refused to play further when it was so plain that they were to receive t he raw edge whenever it was possible to give it to them. No true sportsman would huved-me other* whe that* the Lizton boys did. Since they were not legally cdled upon to play further after having played nine minutes of the first half prior to the dispute, the came goes to Liztou (» t*»0.
