Hockey trouble brewing againOTTAWA (CP) — After several months of peace, Hockey Canada and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) appear to be at loggerheads again. The CAHA wants the International Ice HockeyFederation (IIHF), theworld governing body, to refuse approval of an exhibition series between European hockey teams and the World Hockey Association, scheduled this winter. But Hockey Canada, which is supposed to be Canada’s voice in international hockey dealings, does not agree with that approach.Hockey Canada and the CAHA reached an agreement on international hockey dealings in June at the insistence of Sport Minister Iona Cam-pagnolo. Basically it gave Hockey Canada control of international hockey. But Lou Lefaive, director of Sport Canada, said it now appears the CAHA wants to upset the agreement. The CAHA is trying to get WHA teams to pay it for the major junior players they draft every year, but the league has refused. Hockey Canada thinks the CAHA should continue court action it has started against the WrHA and not take the international route to getWHA agreement.U'faive said there is also the risk that the WHA could be in serious financial difficulty without the European series. The European teams would likely withdraw from the WHA series if the IIHF refused to sanction the series because the Europeans would be barred from other international competitions.
