4 Las Vet as DAILY OPTICMonday, October 21, 1968tCowboys smash Mines 85-14The New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys, stung by the most recent NAIA poll which placed them as the second team in the nation, rolled their way over the Colorado Mines Orediggers 85-14 in celebration of their 69th annual homecom-Highlands started the fireworks by scoring each time it got the ball during the first quarter. Carl Garrett scored on runs to 34 and one .yards, with Kelly going one for two on ‘he PTAs and ending a string of 20 straight.field goal attempt recovered by the Orediggers in the opening minutes of the second stanza set up the Colorado school’s only score of the half. Mines took, to the airHoy Culberson recovered another fumble on the CM 45, and Carl Browning recovered on the 24 to set up two more HU scores as Herold passed to Leonard Garrett and Steve Pruitt passed complete to Taplin. Tier-old also hit Cortez along the sideline to bring in another six points.In the first play of the fourth quarter Puritt kept the ball and cut through the middle foreight yards for the final Highlands score.Mines would score once more after Highlands fumbled on their own 19 and the Orediggers recovered and fought their way into the endzone.Statistically, Highlands garnered 28 first downs to Mines 13, HU completed 14 of 20 passes attempted to Mines 13 out of 40, on the ground, HU amassed 1379 yards rushing compaired 123 for the Colorado school.Individually, Carl Garrett added 137 yards rushing to his total for the season, and Grady Herold complied an 11 for 14 record in passes completed.
