Today the pot of gold is in sight, but only a select few will be allowed to continue in the race. It’s only a matter of hours now before area high school girls tennis players know who will be hang ing up their rackets for the season and who will remain on the track for the final laps. WITH FRIDAY’S preliminary rounds out of the way, area contestants are down to the serious busi ness of fighting for team titles and individual state qualifying berths as district action continues this morning. The four singles semifinalists as well as the four doubles pairs who reach the semifinal round will qualify for the state tournament which begins next Thursday at Arlington High School and other Dist. 214 courts. Stevenson and Barrington share the lead with eight points apiece going into today’s quarterfinals in the Crystal Lake Central District, and each has both its singles players and both doubles duos still alive. Crystal Lake South, with one singles and two doubles entries remaining in competition, is a close third with seven points. Top-seeded Susy Jaeger of Stevenson will take on Terri Stewart of Mundelein in one quarterfinal match, while second-seeded Andrea Jaeger, also of Stevenson, meets Kathy Trnka of Jacobs. The other singles pairings are No. 3 seed Venise Miller of Barrington vs. Maria Athens of Crystal Lake South and No. 4 seed Debbie Prochaska of Cary Grove vs. Sara Olson of Barrington. District tennis IN DOUBLES Crystal Lake Central’s top-seeded tandem of Ann McKillip and Jinny Quick battle Barrington’s Renee Yung and Sue Bey. No. 2 seeds Patty Thompson and Julie Paul of Barrington face Crystal Lake South’s team of Murphy and Wall, while No. 3 seeds Karin Heiser and Sherry Johnson of Stevenson meet the Rolding-Snyder team from Cary Grove. Fourth-seeded Darlynn Faatz and Kel ly Thomas of Crystal Lake South clash with Mi chelle and Christine Lehman of Stevenson. This morning’s action will begin at 9 a.m., with the finals scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The Hersey District features a double tie among the leaders as quarterfinals get underway today at 9 a.m. Arlington and Deerfield share the lead with eight points each, while Fremd and Hersey have chalked up seven apiece for the third spot. Both Ar lington and Deerfield have advanced all four of their entries. Fremd takes one singles player and both doubles teams into the quarterfinals, while Hersey goes in with both singles entries and one in doubles. No. 1 singles seed Beth Wagner of Hersey will look at Anita North of Prospect in this morning’s opening round, and Freud’s Beth Smigel, the No. 3 seed, will face Hersey’s Lori O’Neill. Arlington and Deerfield clash head-to-head in the singles quarterfinals, matches that could hold the key to the district title. Second-seeded Mindy Thor son of Deerfield takes on Arlington’s Kerri Tanner, and fourth-seeded Dana Weber of Arlington will at tempt to eliminate Deerfield’s Mary Jo Martin. In doubles Arlington faces opponents from Sacred Heart and Fremd while Deerfield tries to dispose of Fremd’s other doubles entry along with Hersey’s tandem. The pairings are Gena Weber and Carol Wenzel of Arlington (No. 1 seeds) vs. Mary Hol lowed and Chris Murphy of Sacred Heart; Karen Paice and Donna Rumsavich of Fremd (No. 2) vs. Sandy Mueller and Suzanne Johnson of Arlington; Robin Glink and Karla Schrader of Hersey (No. 3) vs. Lisa Rolfe and Carol Hokin of Deerfield; and Amy and Laura Ruedig of Deerfield (No. 4) vs. Lisa Walz and Patty Kearns of Fremd. AT LAKE Park, Elk Grove has advanced one sin gles and one doubles entry to the quarterfinals. Mary Munro edged her Driscoll opponent 4-6, 6-4, 6- 3 in the second round after a first round bye. Kim Bolvin and Beth Walsh also sat out the opening round before dumping a Glenbard East duo 6-0, 6-2 in the second frame. The Grenadiers’ other doubles team, Kim Algozin and Lynn Christensen, split sets with a Willowbrook tandem as darkness fell and will complete their attempt to advance into the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. today. Maine West, also competing at the Lake Park dis trict, has one doubles team still alive. Donna Logisz and Debbie Lindeman topped a Driscoll team 6-2, 6- 0 following a first round bye. Results from the Elgin Larkin District — where the competitors include Conant, Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg and Streamwood — were unavailable.
