O' ream than last yearWHA asked to pay for under-age juniorsInternational series in jeopardyOTTAWA (CP) — The World Hockey Association risks cancella-tion of its 12-game international series if no settlement is made quickly with junior owners for untler-agc players signed as professionals this year.Ed Chynoweth. executive-director of the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League, said Thursday a .settlement must be reached before a meeting of hockey’s international governing body Oct. 27-29 in Vienna.The Junior owners arc sacking 110,000 for each junior signed as provided in an escape clause in the standard player contract.Until a settlement is reached, 10under-age juniors, currently playing professional hockey, have been suspended by the Canadian Ama-lenr Hockey Association.If no agreement is reached, the International Jco Hockey Federation (HHF) will be told the WHA is not in good standing with the national body by playing suspended juniors.Gordon Remvick, who will represent Hockey Canada in Vienna, said the International series would probably be cancelled by the IIHF.Chynoweth said the escape clause was filled into recent contracts to provide for exceptional under-age piayers who might turn professional before their Junior careers end.But we’ve got to get some compromise with the WHA,” Chynoweth said.Lawyers for the major junior league have been informed by Chynoweth to claim a $150,000 bend pul up last year by the WHA not to sign under-age juniors, he said.Last month a suit was filed against Toronto lawyer Alan Eaglc-son,the WHA’s Birmingham Bulls, controlled by John Bassett of Toronto, and three junior players in a dispute over breached contracts, Eagleson and the Bulls are being sued for inducing under-age players to breach contracts and turn pro-fesslonal, the players for breach of contract.
