Committee not thought outa role in determining theBy ALEX BINKLEYOTTAWA (CP) — The creation of a committee to study the future of the Canada Games has not been well thought out, says Lou Lefaive, president of the National Sport and Recreation Centre. The committee was “pulled together in a hurry and it doesn’t appear to have been too representative” of several sports-related groups interested in such a study, said Lefaive, former director of the government’s fitness and amateur sport branch. The committee was set up and members appointed before the government decided on its terms of reference, the importance of its recommendations or a lengthy list of other details, he said in an interview. The committee, picked on the opening day of the Summer Games in St. John’s, Nfld., in August, will hold its first meeting in Toronto Nov. 18. It is supposed to report to Sport Minister Iona Cam-pagnolo by September, 1978. The report is expected to playfuture form of the Games. It also is expected to recommend whether the Games continue beyond 1981, to the end of the present scheduled series. STARTED IN QUEBEC The Games started in Quebec City in the winter of 1967 and have alternated as summer and winter events every second year since then. Brandon, Man., will hold Winter Games in 1979 and a yet-to-be picked Ontario site will be the site of the 1981 Summer Games.Lefaive said “the basic issue the committee will have to address itself to is the level of competition of the Games. ” “All the other issues such as sports and sites will flow from that decision.”Another key issue is whether the Games should remain in their current format of developmental competitions for younger athletes or be geared to high-level competitions open to the top athletes, Lefaive said.Generally the Games are restricted to athletes under 21Who are not members of national teams or have not taken part in major international tournaments.EXPLAINS DELAYJack Pelech, a Hamilton, Ont., lawyer who is chairman of the committee, said in an in-terview several factors—including the working out of terms of reference and membership on the committee-caused the three-month delay in getting the committee into operation.Besides Pelech, other committee members are Bill McEwan, former president of the Sports Federation of Canada, Don Johnson, Newfoundland assistant deputy1977: Hat Pins vs. Rascals, Out-of-Towners vs. Sour Grapes, Andrew’s Beauties vs. Yo-Yo’s, Legionaires vs. Caspers, Imps vs. Groovy V, Rolling Pins vs. Rebels, Rustlers vs. Happy Housewives, Late Risers vs. Impossibles.minister of sport and former president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, Don Whyatt of St. John’s, Peter Leseaux, assistant deputy federal health minister responsible for Miss Cam-pagnolo’s department and Hugh Noble of Halifax and a member of that city’s organizing committee for the 1969 Games.Lefaive said he hopes the Games will remain developmental because there are enough high-level competitions. Also, a high-level competition would be dominated by Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta, he said.Women’s High Single: Judy Bockus 223; Women’s High Triple: Judy Bockus 546; Team High Single: Us 1386; Men’s High Single: Jack Lewis 230; Men’s High Triple: Jack Lewis 594; Team High Triple: Us 4886.STANDINGS - Lucky Strikes 21, Us 19, Bottoms Up 16.
