RICHACRESColumn Addressed To Filly students; Normandy Vet Says Negroes May PlayBy NEAL RICHARDSThis column this week is being addressed to only fifty (50) persons. If you are not one of those fifty, this will probably not concern you. If you are, we are sincere in our plea that you take time to answer this column. This writing is directed to those fifty persons who voted in favor of the Board of Regents’ ruling concerning the ban against colored athletes. Now, we’re not dragging up any dead-dogs, nor are we here to weigh the pros and cons, but we do want to know why. }One of our learned contemporaries has been most vociferous in his “Word to the Wise.” Maybe if we were wise, we wouldn’t need an answer to our question, but on something like this, we plead guilty * to ignorance. For we cannot comprehend how people can vote for something that is, as far as we can see, so much against, so utterly foreign to principles of Americanism and a civilized, cultured world. We are not a Northerner. Neither are we a Southerner. We have, however, observed racial discrimination in many forms and in many areas. We have never yet understood it.We do understand, real well, the attitude of one voter last week, who, after circling the vote “I am opposed . . .” added in a cryptic penciled note: “I’m a veteran, and a Negro hauled me out of the water at Normandy. Guess they can play football.”We’re not holding him up as a paragon of decency, but that’s the way we look at things—that a man is judged by what he does, not how he does it.Maybe we’re just stupid or gullible or something, but we’ve always had a nice soft spot in our heart for the principles that are grouped under the headings of “inalienable rights . . . guaranteed the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness . . . the equality of man.”So, if one or all of those fifty persons who still think it is OK to bar a free American from enjoying the rights and privileges that are guaranteed by our Constitution to him, then we frever-ently wish they would enlighten us.’Cause friend, frankly we just can’t see it.
