Kotynski, Smolinski win in EastBy Brian FrangellaGoing into the SICA East cross country meet, there were two things that were fairly certain. One is that Thornwood had the edge to have the first-place finisher for both the boys and the girls. The other was that the team that grouped the middle runners together would gain the advantagefor the team win. Both of those came true. Justin Smolinski and Cara Kotynski ofThornwood took the individual titles, but it was the tight packing of the Homewood-Flossmoor boys and girlsrunners that earned the team title.“That is what we have talked about for the last month,” H-F girls’ coach John Crissey explained. “We had a 29-second split between our number-one runner and our number-five. If you can do that, it is the key.”The Vikings packed so tightly in fact, that they grabbed second through sixthplace to secure the SICA East championship.Kotynski jumped out quickly and never looked back as she stormed to a22-second victory. But Rachel Saak followed her with a host of Vikings. The Vikings scored 20, Thornwood placed second with 39, Shepard had 79, and Thornridge finished with 96. The win is the eighth consecutive conferencetitle for H-F.A major difference in the outcome was as a result of Michelle Kajdi’s illness. The usual No. 2 T-Bird could not recover from sickness and had trouble breathing.“My legs could have went faster; 1 just couldn’t breathe, an exhausted Kajdi said. “It was tight in my chest. I never miss practice, but I missed yesterday■ See EAST, Page B-3
