The FWB High School Vikings football team failed in a last minute bid for victory Friday night, and was forced to settle for a 6 to 6 tie with Samson, Alabama, at Memorial Stadium. Time ran out as the Vikings tried to get off a last second field goal from the Samson Tiger’s 9 yardline.The Vikings made their move in the last minute and 57 seconds of the game following a fumble recovery by James Melvin at the Samson 40 yardline. Paul Leon hit split end Randy Carter with two straight passes to the Tiger’s 15 yard line. Leon tried to find Carter again, but the flashy end was cut down by the Samson defenders too early at the 2 yard line and an interference penalty moved the ball to the Samson 7. Leon lost two yards on a left end sweep. Time ran out as the Vikings were trying to get a field goal attempt away.The Vikings threatened to score on four unsuccessful drives in the second half, losing the ball on the Samson 1 yard line, on the 5 yard line, and the 6 yardline, and again at the 9 yard line.Samson started moving early in the first quarter when Gary Hughes ran 36 yards to the Viking 5 yard line. Pressure on the Tiger center caused two successive fumbles, the Vikings falling on the second fumble in the endzone to stop the drive.The next time the Tigers got the ball they marched 49 yards for the first touchdown. Gary Hughes dived over tackle for two yards and the score. An attempted pass by quarterback Mike Utter was batted down.The remainder of the first half was a grueling battle with neither team able to move the ball until seconds before halftime when Leon hit slotback Donie Anderson with a 22 yard pass.Samson amassed 85 yards rushing and 31 yards passing in the first half, while the Vikings could gain only 14 yards rushing and 22 yards passing.The Vikings came out strong er to start the second half, stop ping the Tigers cold and forcing a punt on the fourth play. Ricky Whitfield stormed over his left guard for 47 yards to the Sam son 20 yard line. Six running plays by Whitfield and Leon put the ball at the Tiger 1 yard line.
