Rhinelandoi saw some of his wildest deeds.When he came into Rhinelanderin the spring. Forbare usually made his headquarters at Dempsey’ssaloon and gambling place in Hungry Hollow. One night after he hadcome in from the woods, he went on a big drunk and the next morning. was in an unusually bad humor. *He thumped up and dow*’ Thay-,r trelt; t, shouting he wanted atough guy to eat up for breakfast.Four-Finger Jack and Johnny McGraw came ah lg and saw Forbare. Downtown, they encounteredQuigley, who not only was plenty tough but also quite an athlete, being a skilled football player, fighter and wrestler.“Forbare is down in the Hollow, itching for a fight,” they said.“So am I, said Quigley, and went to find Forbare. They met each other on the platform of the old Soo depot, now the freight station.“I hear you’re looking for someone to eat before breakfast,” saidQuigley.“Yeah,” growled Forbare; “showhim to me.”“Here I am,” snapped Quigley and the battle was on. But it didn’t last long. Quigley sent over a Joe Louis that caught Forbare's jaw near the ear, and the big fellow went down, bumping his head on the platform. Birdies and sweet music.-Before the present dam was built n il* Wi I'onvjn river, there vas another dam at the rapids, with three gates. The rapids were filled with rocks, and the piling of the two bridges made “running the rapids” so dangerous that several persons and one cow lost their lives going through the dam.But Forbare bet another lumberjack a keg of beer he could ride a log iltrough the dam and down the rapids without being killed.The main gate was opened and Forbare started through Crowds were gathered on the bridges and along the shore. Forbare rode through all right, but as he passed under the Soo bridge, he turned to wave at the people. That caused him to lose his balance and over he went He got out safely, however.On another occasion, two otherlumberjacks went through the dam and down thfi rapids, in a bateau like the one at the logging museum. One of them was drowned, but the other was pulled out on a wing dam that came out near where the big sewer now empties into thechannel.
