BY KEVIN ZACOUR“This is one time I can honestly say that I don't care about the score of the game. Our men put their hearts on the line tonight — every single one of them, whether they were playing or watching from the sideline. It was super! The above words were spoken by OHS head mentor Mo Tipton following the Brunswick tilt, and it certainly was a different band of Red Riders that took the field last Friday evening. Even though Brunswick took the contest 6-0, everyone who witnessed the game could feel the enthusiasm within the Orrville crew.“Orrville’s young kids played one heck of a first half. They were really psyched, stated Brunswick's coach, Chuck Reisland. “I’ve seen Orrville on film four times this year, and this was the best I've seen them play. Mo has to be given a lot of credit. He had those young kids really ready forus.MFor the record, the Blue-Devils victory over Orrville was the first in seven years and the first ever in Red Rider Stadium.Brunswick, on the initial series of the game, ran outside very well and moved 34 yards (from its 35 to the OHS 31) before running out of downs. The “new-look Rider offense, running from various “I formations, quickly got untracked. On the first play, quarterback Paul Dobbins whipped a perfect 14 yard pass to slot-back Kim Gochnauer. A trio of runs by Doug Mitchell and a pitch to Gochnauer netted another first down at the Brunswick 43.Following a seven yard loss, Dobbins flipped another aerial to Gochnauer, good for 15 more yards, and this, coupled with a three yard plunge by Mitchell, gave OHS a first and ten at the 32 yard stripe. Then Gochnauer hammered out seven yards to the 25, but a motion penalty and two incomplete passes put Orrville into a punting situation. Freshman Joe Gochnauer booted to the Blue-Devil 6, and here Brunswick took over.Although a sticky Rider defense kept the Blue-Devils pinned deep in their territory and forced them to punt, Orrville also failed to move the pigskin. A pair of punts ensued, thus OHS (following a 10 yard punt return by Kim Goch-iBY KEVIN ZACOUROrrville High will be after its irst win in a month this Friday light when it plays host to the \kron South “Big Blue.South thus far has posted a 1-4 verall record (1-3 in Akron City Series play) with its only victory :hus far coming over Akron Central Hower (38-0). The halfbacks, Larry Carter (6, 180) and Joe Sanders (5-11,155), are both fine runners, as is fullback Ed Fornly (5-10, 175).Orrville will be facing a 6-1 defense for the first time thisnauer) was in possession at its 34 with 8:40 left to play in the first half.A pair of off-tackle blasts by Gochnauer and Mitchell (which garnered five and ten yards respectively) netted a first down. Fullback Bruce McHenry followed with a 20 yard sweep to the BHS 31 to compile another first down. Moving 11 yards in the next four plays for yet another first and ten, theRiders were soon saddled with a 4th and seven situation at the Brunswick 18 with less than four minutes of play left in the half. Rick Falk's 35 yard field goal attempt fell short of its mark, and the half ended with Brunswick in control at its own 30.Orrville had dominated first half play (92 yards to 77 for Brunswick) but the more experienced Blue-Devil outfit out-dueled the Riders in the second half. The Red Riders started in good fashion, as they picked up a first down (10 yard jaunt by Mitchell) after receiving the second half kickoff. However, they were unable to come up with the necessary yardage to move further. Brunswick began a drive of its own, but Paul Dobbins pilfered a Marke Gibson pass putting theRed and White in business at their 33. On the initial play of this series, Dobbins lofted an aerial intended for Gochnauer. Although the pass fell incomplete, the officials detected a case of pass interference at the OHS 47, and the Locals were able to advance to Brunswick’s 37 before having to turn the bail over. After a five yard pickup to Brunswick’s 26, Devil Gary Henry rambled 48 yards on an off-tackle play, setting the ball down on the Rider 26. A pair of seven yard runs pushed the pigskin to the 17, and the Blue-Devils gained another first down three plays later, as third quarter action ended. On second and goal from the one, Brunswick’s Garry Patrick rammed over for an apparent TD. However an illegal motion penalty was assessed, which nullified the score. QB Gibson tossed a completion to end Jim Cheekelsky on the following play — again for a touchdown. This time an illegal receiver downfield was detected and moved Brunswick back to the 21. After an eight yard loss, Gibson raced around right end for 21 stripes to set the Blue-clad outfit on OHS’ 8. The fourth down, 25 yard field goal attempt by Stabile was blocked by Rider end Mike Davisson, and it appeared that Lady Luck was definitely with the Orrville RedVEnglish (5-11,190). Tom Becton (6-0, 185) a tough hitter, will take his post at the middle guard position, and the baekfield will be played by Steve Traylor (5-11,170), Greg Dixon (5-11, 170), Charles McReynolds (5-11,175), and Faron Robinson (5-10, 175).Orrville’s lineups should look similar to the ones that started last week against Brunswick. However, Coach Tipton is hopeful that Dick Stuckey and Craig Reiheld (both out of the last several games with kneeDoug Gessford, Steve Rogers, and Andy Hranko at tackle; JimHranko and Chris Catrone at guard, and Tim Stroup will handle the snapping duties.Defensively, Stanton, Steve Caulier, and Mike Davisson will work the ends, and Hochstetler, Caulier, and Gessford will see action at tackle. Linebackers McHenry, Jim Hranko, and possibly Reiheld will back up the defensive line, and the middle guard will be either Jim Hranko, Greg Begert, or DougRiders. However, on its second play from scrimmage, Orrville’s luck ran out, when Kim Gochnauer fumbled after having raced 17 years to the Red and White 37.It took Brunswick a total of 10 plays to cover the remaining distance (one a 21 yard pass). The climax occurred when Tony Stabile crossed the goal line from the one, on a fourth down situation. The PAT pass proved ineffective, but Brunswick was in command 6-0.The Riders kept possession for only three additional plays in the ballgame (the last of the trio was an interception), as the Blue-Devils ran out the clock and protected their 6-0 lead in the process.“The tide really turned in the second half,” explained coach Reisland. “When we went into the locker room at halftime, we knew that we were getting good yardage on the sweeps — so in the second half we swept. We tried to pound on their young kids in the first half, but it didn ’ t work.“The Orrville team, for all of their problems, put out a good football squad. They had a lot of spirit — as much as I've ever seen.Mo Tipton also had some observations, “I was rather happy with the way our offense played, we had a few morepasses that could have been hit on. I really think the passing game could get a lot better with a little more time.”“Brunswick is a fine football team. Come to think of it, there are a lot of good football teams in the Chippewa Conference with losing records.”FOLLOW-THROUGH Orrville’s starting baekfield had a total yardage output of (59) yards entering the Brunswick contest. Perhaps surprising, but Mitchell (50 yards), McHenry (37), and Gochnauer (28) did excellent jobs despite their limited playing time previous to Friday. The offensive line also looked better on it pass blocking. The Riders’ Paul Dobbins tossed 13 passes, and although only four were complete, the passing was a definite change for the better. It gave their defensive opponents something to think about, and also provided the fans with a much more exciting game than the score indicated.Kim Gochnauer is “Big Red’s” leading pass snagger, catching five for 48 yards on the season. Pat I^orson has picked off 3 for 14 yards. Dobbins has now completed 4 of 17 aerials, while McHenry is 5 for 19. Freshman punter, Joe Gochnauer, did an adequate job last contest, booting five for 123 yards, and, more importantly, had none blocked.BRUNSWICK interior lineman Russ Cushion (52) grabs a handful of Rider halfback Kim Gochnauer’s jersey during first half action last Friday evening. Gochnauer rushed sixtimes for 28 yards and caught three passes, but his efforts were not enough to halt the Blue Devils. Wayne Zacour Photo.
