State cross-countryNEW PALTZThe State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) varsity cross-country championship meet will be held today on New Paltz’s five-mile course. Starting time-is 11.Ten colleges will compete in the meet -- New Paltz. Buffalo, Cortland. Geneseo. Oneonta. Plattsburgh. Fredonia. Brockport. Potsdam and Oswego.Cortland is the defending champion. Coached by Murray Banks, the Dragons are led by Ed Faulkner. Don Mvers. Bob Oates and George Pfeiffer.Buffalo is expected to be one of the better challengers for the top spot with Mark Ryerson. last year’s frosh star, and Jerry Pollock, seventh in 1968, pacing the squad. Coach Dick Marsh also has Tom Nasal and Steve Trudel on his side. The latter was 85th in the 1968 NCAA College Division championships.New Paltz looks to improve on their ninth place finish of a year ago. Besides having the home advantage, coach Ed Bell's Hawks are led by senior Jim Longo, who recently broke the course record at Marist College. Veterans Jim gorden and Paul Spadaro and newcomer John Groth make up the nucleus of the team.The starting and finishing lines of the New Paltz course are located southwest of Elting Gymnasium on the campus.
