It ended a three-year run by the Lady Golden Demons as the Big East’s best.Junior Leighann Bowen and freshman Erin Pichey each achieved all-conference with their finishes of sixth (personal-best 21:30) and ninth (21:42), respectively.We wanted to get out to a fast start and stay with the Rocky Mount girls,” Bowen said. “Overall, we are very pleased with how we raced. Erin goes out the first mile and is faster, we’re usually about even on the second, and then I am faster in the last mile.”Pichey said they were proud of the way Fike performed.“It was a good race and we tried our best,” the freshman said. “Wb pushed each other, trying to get our personal bests.”First-year coach Patrick Yarbrough said the team came out and improved, which is what he wanted.“We’re not as competitive yet in conference,” he said. “We’re young and improving on both sides, with the boys not even having a senior. So it was a good day of running.”BRYANT TOP AREA RUNNERSouthern Nash senior Kevin Bryant flew out in front of the pack along with Whitehead and second-place finisher Christian Tippette, but by the time the runners came out of the mile mark, Bryant had settled in to third place, which is where he finished with a time of 17:40.“This is probably my favorite course of the whole conference,” Bryant said. It’s got a lot of hills, but its not too hard. But at the same time, it’s got some challenges.”He said he was happy with third, but believes he could have done a little better even though he shaved 2 seconds off his personal-best time. Three weeks ago, his personal best was 18:16.“I had been getting second the past few meets, so really, I was looking for that,” he said. “But, I got a personal best of 17:40. So in the end, I beat the clock, but I didn’t beat the runner.”Hunt sophomore Marcus Medi-na-Artis took fifth to be the highest-placing Wilson County boys runner with a time of 17:59.Afterward he sad that he was a little disappointed in is race.“Fifth place, if s not that bad, but I could’ve done better,” Medina-Artis said. “It’s definitely motivation.
