Hunt’s Lauren-j§ West might as well be the definition in 3-A Big East Conference girls cross-country.The sophomore jumped out in front at the conference’s championship meet Wednesday afternoon at Red Oak Middle School and never looked back in staying unbeaten against conference foes this year with a winning time of 20 minutes, 23 seconds.The time was 3 seconds faster than what West ran last year in finishing second to Nash Central’s Michaela Williams.And when Williams pushed the pace early, West wasn’t about to let history repeat in the title meet.“I definitely expected her to push the pace,” a smiling West said. “And it did push me. 1 just didn’t think it would be for as long as she did it. It was surprising West pulled ahead of the Williams, who would eventually finish third, and increased the distance between her and second place a little more each mile.By the end, West was 27 seconds ahead of Marcy McCall Leland of Rocky Mount and 37 ahead of Williams.The victory was sweet for West, who would be joined in the Big East unbeaten ranks by the boys winner, Northern Nash sophomore Stephen Whitehead.Hunt sophomore Lauren West leaves the rest of the field behind en route to claiming the 3-A Big East Conference cross-country title at Red Oak Middle School on Wednesday afternoon.
