Demons stung by ScorpsBy The New Mexican StaffFARMINGTON — The T-N-T combination of halfback Todd Shaw and quarterback Todd Youngblood ignited Farmington to a 21-point first quarter explosion en route to a 28-7 victory over the Santa Fe Demons Friday night in the District 1AAAA opener for both teams;Shaw scored two of his three touchdowns in the opening 12 minutes on runs of 11 and 9 yards. Youngblood ran it infrom 10 yards away as theScorpions took a 21-0 first quarter lead and never looked back, much to the delight of their homecoming crowd.Farmington upped its advantage to 28-0 on Shaw’s third touchdown run in the third quarter. Santa Fe ended three-quarters worth of offensive frustration with a 27-yard Eddie Femandez-to-Geoff Thompson touchdown pass.The loss lowers the Demons to 2-4 overall, 0-1 in the district heading into Friday’s gamewith 1AAAA favorite Del Norte.Farmington, 1-0 in the district, climbed over the .500 mark for the year at 4-3.The Scorpions took the game’s opening kickoff' and drove 64 yards in seven plays for their first score. Todd Shaw capped off the march on an 11-yard run with 8:17 showing on the clock.Following* the first of two Fernandez interceptions, Farmington covered 52 yards in 6 plays, the finale a 10-yard scoring run by Youngblood, the man who made the interception.Leading 14-0, the Scorpions successfully pulled off an on-sides kick on the ensuing kickoff.Kelly Walling recovered the ball and in a matter of 1:25, Shaw was in the Demons' end zone for the second time, scoring from the 9-yard line.Farmington’s 21-0 lead stood until the 6:45 mark of the third quarter when Shaw slipped into the end zone from the 1-yard line. The 11-play drive chewed up 39 yards.The Demons, who got as close as the Farmington 15, finally found their way into the Scorpions’ end zone. After George Montoya recoved a FHS fumble at the 27, Fernandez connected with Thompson for the 19th time this season. The bruising tight end made the catch at the 5 and went in for Santa Fe’s lone score.Farmington finished with 819 yards in total offense to the Demons’ 202. Fernandez was 14-of-30 passing for 166 yards. He threw two interceptions. The Scorpions amassed 230 of their 319 yards on the ground.Santa Fe will host Del Norte, The Knights, who at one time were top-ranked, are scheduled to meet Los Alamos today at 1:30 at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque.
