The other drawing Conley's praise was sophomore quarterback John Dube.Dube and Jeff Cockburn took turns in each possession as they have for the lastiits three deepest penetrations and may-two games, but Dube directed the club on?pehave earned the starting nod for his day's work.He completed a coupie passes in Sanford’s second period drive, but a fourth down sack ended the threat. Sanford moved again on its next possession and had a first down at the TA 14, but another sack went a long way in snuffing out the bid.Late in the game a Dube to John Koux pass covered 43 yards and Sanford was driving again, but this time Harper got thefirst of two late-game interceptions to help preserve the shutout. After winning its first game, Sanford has now lost four in a row The Redskins will try to break back into the win columnFriday at Westbrook.Thornton's pattern is broken, it will be playing two home games in arow for the first time, but the Trojans will try to keep up the win-at-home effort.Deering. which mudded its way to a (M) tie in a quagmire Saturday, will provide the opposition Deering had won three straight games before the tie. Right now, just a couple of miles down Rte. 1, the Thornton Academy football team is doing a pretty fair roller coaster imitation — rolling and riding, up and down, through the first half of its season.Saturday was another peak on the journey, as the Golden Trojans put the big play to good use (all three touchdowns were scored from at least 40 yards out) to knock off rival Sanford 22-0 in a wet and raw TA Homecoming,Thornton has now won all three home games and lost both on the road And there’s a pattern, win, loss, win, loss, win. The closest game the Trojans have been in has been decided by 13 points and Saturday was the second the Trojans have got a shutout. On the other hand, the two away losses have seen TA outscored 75-18.But let us get back to Saturday. “It feels a little better (than last week's 35-6 loss to Portland),’’ said TA coach Bob Cote. We were more aggressive, tackled better and had a much better pass rush.Thornton went back to a four-man front for the game, giving them an extra linebacker, which gave US a few more stunts We could come in with a linebacker and disguise it, they wouldn't know where we were coming from,” Cote explainedTackle Scott Schildroth, ends Ed Jackson and Don Cote and linebackers Randy Hill and Jim Madore were keys to the pass rush.Sanford coach Pat Conley was discouraged by the loss. 1 was very, very down over our performance. I thought we had progressed after the South Portland ame (Sanford dropped a tough 8-6 ecision to the still undefeated Rea Riots last week), but we got back into the old mistakes, mostly mental mistakes, against Thornton.SOUTH WATERBORO - Massabesic defeated Kennebunk twice in cross country races held at halftime Saturday of the Mustang-Ram football game at Ronco FieldThe Mustang boys lifted their record to 7-5 with a 22-35 win over Kennebunk. Massabesic's Tim Laroche crossed the finish line in front of everyone in a time of 15:26. Chris Gardner of the Rams was second in 15:47.Keith Driscoll trotted home in thirdKlace for Massabesic with a time of 16:18 ennebunk’s Mark DeTeso was fourth in 16:41.Fourth, fifth and sixth places were taken by Mustangs’ Chuck Karcher, Brian Phinney and Greg Olivier in times of 16:46, 17:11 and 17:15. Dave Moran of Kennebunk was eighth in 17:21. Massabesic’s Bill Rollins was ninth. His time was 17:24.“We talked to the kids all week about how Thornton lived off the big play, but Bob Cote does an excellent job and they took advantage of our mistakes.Thornton turned its first big play with just under two minutes left in the first period. On the second play after taking over on a punt, quarterback Don Cote lofted his first and one of few passes to end Mark Norwood who ran the last 33 yards untouched for a 53-yard scoring play. A conversion pass was no good Craig Gardner, again Thornton's offensive star with touchdown jaunts of 45 and 41 yards, had a hand in the next TA points, scored on a safety. Gordner boomed a punt that Sanford couldn't hold on to, and as the ball squirted closer to the Sanford end zone, Jay Harper made a tackle, forced a fumble and Sanford recovered in the end zone But it was twoEoints for an 84) Thornton lead and Sanford ad to kick from its 20.Thornton got good field position at the Sanford 45, but as it turned out. the field position didn’t make much difference. On the first play, Steve Cyr did his work on the line and backs Randy Hill and Kevin Cormier chipped in to give Gardner a big hole into the secondary, and he was gone. Another pass for the conversion failed “Once we get Gardner in the secondary, he's tough, said Cote, a statement Sanford wouldn't dispute.Thornton nulled a very similar scoring play early in the fourth quarter. Sanford was in a goalhne defense, trailing only 14-0, as TA went for it with a fourth down and inches to go at the 45 Gardner went through the left side this time, but the result was the same. Tackle Paul Lowell was in on this one and Hill again took care of a linebacker. This time TA got the conversion with the brothers Leach, Dan at quarterback and Dave at end teaming upon a pass.Chris Rold and Mark Mayo of the Rams were 10th and 11th. The times were 17:29 and 17:42.The Mustang girls shot to 4-2 with a 19-39 triumph over Kennebunk. Dorinda Smith was first in 15:12 and Mustang teammate Lisa Provencher, who led the race until the very end, finished second in 15:17. Sally Perkins of Kennebunk was third in 16:25.Fourth and fifth spots belonged to Cheryl Cook and Kim Provencher of Massabesic Their respective times were 17:13 and 17:27. The last four to come across were Annette Look of Kennebunk.
