Warriors Upset Previously Unbeaten Littlestown 16-6; Hard Play Brings 8 FumblesIt was a wishbone come true for Gettysburg High Schooi here Friday evening as the Warriors dealt a crippling blow to Littles-town’s Blue Mountain League title hopes with a 16-6 triumph in a hard fought game before about 2,000 homecoming fans.The Warriors were a distinct surprise in dominating most phases of the game as they sent the previously unbeaten Thunderbolts reeling to their first loss after five wins.Coach Don Young reported to the wishbone. In fact not only did he utilize the wishbone he had been working with ail summer and through pre-season drills, but he incorporated an “I” and a pro-set during the 48-minutes of football.The spectacular plays were performed by Jim Williams, Tom Grouse, Andy Crouse and Tim Kane. But he real workhorses, the boiler room crew who toiled wilh steady patience were Jeff Kane, Doug Staub, Kirby Smith, Sam Leedy, George Cressiler, Jody MaeAvoy and Dick Davies.The Warriors’ 4-3 and 4-4 defenses proved too much for the Littlestown offense. Each time the Bolts tried to get something moving they were rocked with blasting tackles which in many eases resulted in fumbles. In fact it was through a fumble that Gettysburg scored ife first touchdown, and it was via an interception that is scored its second.EARLY TD PASSThe Warriors “put it all together” in the early minutes of the first period. Littlestown received he opening kickoff and three plays later quarterback Bernie Wolfe fumbled. Jody MaeAvoy. recovered and Gettysburg had possession on the Bolt 38.On the very first play from scrimmage, Jim Williams faded back and lobbed a perfect pass into the waiting arms of tackle eligible Doug Staub who, with-ou breaking stride, continued the remaining 38 yards to the end zone just 1:40 into the game. Tom Fiscel faked a placement and fired a pass to Tom Crouse who made a diving catch for the two extra points.Gettysburg’s eight points held up through the first half. During the middle two periods, each team held the other in check, littlestown moved the ball but its many mistakes 6topped several potential scoring drives. The hall sea-sawed many times across the 50-yard line but with no great penetration.Just after the second half got underway it looked as if Gettysburg might get another score on file bobrd. Williams connected with Andy Crouse for 13 yards and Tim Kane got off a picture 32-yard run to put the ball on the Littlestown 13. However, a penally dropped the ball back to the 28 and Williams lost 11 yards on the next play, plus the ball. John Spalding recovered on the Bolts’ 39. SHANEBROOK RUNS 45On the first play from scrimmage, Steve Shanebrook dashed off for an exciting 45 yard run and it was only Kirby Smith’s tremendous second effort tackle that stopped him on ■the Gettysburg 16. Three plays later the Bolts moved to the six and two plays after that Dave Spangler bolted off the right side of the line for touchdown. Shanebrook tried to run for the two extra points, but was stopped.The Warriors, began getting down under punts faster and hitting harder. Dick Davies almost drove Shanebrook out of the stadium on one punt return and il resulted in a recovered fumble on the Bolt 11. However, the Warriors turned it right back on a fumble., Late in the game, Wolfe stepped back to fire a Bolt pass, but this one found its way ihto the wide open hands of Warrior linebacker Sam Leedy. Leedy took the interception on the Littlestown 28 and 'drove to the three before being stopped by Woife. It took Tim Kane three plays, but he finally bolted in from the one with 4:15 remaining in the game.
