Mason Players SmoMier Falcon RunnerBy Charles Wilkinson (News-Journal Sports Writer)The Mason Comets had littletrouble in running over the Clinton Massie Falcons Friday night, on the loser’s field by the score of 42 to 0 The Falcons were never in the game as the Comets made long gains timeafter time.The Falcons received the ballto start the game, but not being able to pick up a first down turned the ball over to the Comets on a punt and the Comets began to march down the field for the first score. Mason took the hall on its own 45-yard line and in 10 plays was on the scoreboard. Russ Moore, senior halfback, skirted left end for the touchdown. Quarterback Ferry IJchtenberg tried a passfor tin* two points hut was unable to complete it and the score was Mason 6 and Clinton Massie 0 with five minutes left in tin* first quarter.fl*MASON kicked off to theFalcons and they were unable to pick up a first down. The Falcons punted again to the Comets and on the sixth play from scrimmage Moore wentan/44drive stalled on the Knights’five.Kings scored the first time they had tin* hall, driving 54 yards in seven plays.The Knights forced a fumble on llit* first play from scrimmage hy tin* Wildcats and hashed 30 yards in five plays to make it 12-0.Kings scored twice more inthe second ncriorl addinc* thnaround right end and put theComets on the scoreboard againand this time the try for the two points was good and the Comets led in the game 14 to0 with 43 seconds left in thefirst quarter.On the first play of the second quarter Mike Williams, second string quarterback for the Falcons, picked up 24 yards and it looked as if the Falcons were going to move the ball. On thenext play from scrimmage the Falcons lost two yards and with a third and 11 the Falcons had a pass intercepted to stop the march. On about the same amount of plays as before (10) the Comets were in for another score this time Roger Koepfle the Comets senior fullback went in for the six pointer. TheComets led 20 to 0 with a littleover four minutes left in the half.THE FALCONS received thehall on the 12-yard line and moved it to the 50 before they had to turn the ball over to the Comets on fourth down. Mason took the ball down the field again gaining almost anytime they needed the yardage withNews-JournalSPORTS SPOTSWINNERS— Judging resultsof the Wilmington high school Homecoming floats were announced at halftime. Winning float was built hy the junior class. Second place went to the seniors, third to the sophomoresand fourth to the freshman. TheKoepfle taking the ball in again for the six pointer. The try for the two points was not good and the score reached 26 to 0 in favor of the visitors.The Falcons fumbled on the second play from scrimmage with the Comets recovering on the 30 and in two plays the Comets scored again and the try for the two was good and the score was 32 to 0 with eight seconds left in the first half. Moore scored the TI).The third auarter was played on even terms with neither team able to put together a sustained march. The only excitement in the quarter was Mason getting a face mask penalty call and while the officials were talking to the players about the penalty another official calleda personal foul on the Masonbench which gave the Falcons a 30-yard gain on penalties.On the first play of the fourthquarter Steve Barry, senior full back for the Comets, went ovei from the three for the fina score the try for the two point? by Barry was good and the Comets Jed 42 to 0.The rest of the game thlt; Mason coach used his bcncl freely as did Tony Lamke o the Falcons. Lamke was tryinj to give his young boys somiexperience.The Falcons just couldn’t gegoing in the game missing am number of tackles. Anytimi they would start a drive then would always be something tlt;stop it — either a penalty o: a fumble or loss of yardage This leaves the Falcons with ; 2 and 3 record and 1 and ! in league play. Next week thmtravel to Kings for a FAVigame.
