Saturday, Oct. 17, 1970Explosive Taconic Team RollsTo 39-14 Win Over PittsfieldBv BILL MAHANAn explosive Taconic High football team rolled to a 39-14victory over city-rival PittsfieldHigh last night before a crowd of about 3,200 at Wahconah Park. The Taconic win avenged a loss to the Generals last year in their first meeting.Fullback and captain Bernie Street and halfback Gary Wilker each contributed two touchdowns to the victory. Quarterback Chris Jacoby scored one 1D and kicked three points. Halfback Richie Tufo had the c her six-pointer for the Braves. I nd Mike May made the first Pittsfield touchdown on a Tom olan pass and halfback Maury Matteodo had the other on a s iort run, Nolan added the two points after the second.The keen rivalry between theschools and the excitement of the game helped keep the crowd warm on the chilly, windy night. Street went 63 yards with 2:40 left in the first quarter to tie the score at 6-6. Jacoby booted the point to give coach Bill Murray’s club a lead it never lost.Taconic’s third score came with 7:55 to go in the third quarter on a 47-yard run by Wilker to make the score 20-6. Again Jacoby added the point. After the Generals closed the gap to 20-14 on a one-yard plunge by Matteodo with 3:58 remaining in the thiixl period and Nolan rushed over the points, Wilker on the third play from scrimmage went 36 yards on an end run.On the first play of the fourth period the Generals tried a pass from their 33-yard line but Street was there to intercept and speed down the sidelines for the score to give the Braves a 33-14 lead. Jacoby’s pass for thetwo points was dropped.Jacoby made his TD with 8:50 left in the second period on atwo-yard plunge. Taconic had moved 20 yards for the score after recovering a PHS fumble. Toe last Taconic tally came with about 1:15 left in the game on a drive by the second unit. Tufo battled the last 12 yards.Almost 10 minutes had elapsed in the game before there was any scoring. Pittsfield took the edge on a six-yard pass play from Nolan to May in theend zone. The speed of Street and Alonzo Wright stopped a couple of PHS scores when they overtook runners.Taconic netted 387 yards on the ground to 249 for Pittsfield. The Generals had a 15 to 7 edge in first downs. Wilker with 126 yards on 12 carries was the ieading ball carrier. Street had 93 yards on 10 tries and Wright 76 on eight. Jacoby carried 12 times for 43 yards. Tufo contributed 32 yards on three cracks. The Braves had one incomplete pass.
